The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) is a ninth generation video game console and the third model in the Nintendo Switch line. It was launched worldwide on October 8, 2021, which is the same release date as Metroid Dread.
The main revision is the new 7-inch OLED screen, replacing the LCD screen. There are some other performance improvements beyond the 2017 version. A revised dock was released along this model. It is compatible with all current Nintendo Switch accessories, including the Joy-Cons.
The revision was announced in a trailer on July 6, 2021. This trailer detailed the release date as well as all the improved features of the model and dock.
Hardware Differences[]
The OLED model's main new feature is the 7-inch OLED screen. The screen is larger than the original model, with reduced bezels. The OLED screen producing higher quality than the standard LCD display with darker blacks and brighter whites. Beyond the screen, the OLED model has improved speakers, a new adjustable stand and more built-in memory at 64GB. The stand is much wider than the original model, covering the width of the Switch console and can be adjusted to a multitude of angles. The console itself is a bit larger than the original model.
The OLED Model comes with a revised dock, that is available separately. The dock is a bit larger and deeper than the original. It substitutes the USB port inside the dock with a LAN port. The LAN wire is sold separately.
Unlike the old model, while not available on the system, the OLED dock has been reported to have a chip that enables the ability to display 4K imagery at 60 frames-per-second.[1]
Variations and Special Editions[]
The OLED model has two variations: the first included new white-colored Joy-Cons and a white Dock. The other is similar to the original model with blue and red Joy-Cons and a black Dock.
In addition, the OLED model was also released in "Special Editions", some of which are pre-installed with games.
These are the following "Special Edition" models:
Development and pre-release[]
Reception[]
Upon release, it was met with "mixed to positive reviews". IGN gave it an 8/10, EuroGamer gave it a 3 out of 5 rating on it. CNET recepted this 8.7/10.
Trivia[]
- While the first OLED product for Nintendo, it has actually been implemented into a portable video game console before: Sony's PlayStation Vita, which features an OLED screen. Both systems are among the few major OLED products to not be in 4K resolution (despite the fact that the Switch OLED can display 4K when docked theoretically).
- As it is expensive to produce, they have the lowest price out of any OLED product at the time of their releases.
