The Sign is the twelfth episode of the sixth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Synopsis[]
With time running short, the team will have to go to hell and back to stop the end of everything. Who will survive?
Plot[]
In the Temple of the Forgotten, the recreation of Flint finds Alphonso Mackenzie and Yo-Yo Rodriguez handcuffed by Izel. He attempts to attack her but fails, and by doing so reveals that he has the power to recreate the Di'Allas. Izel thus takes possession of his body and combines Flint's geokinesis with the energy contained in the Gravity Containment Device to rebuild the monoliths. Izel then briefly leaves the temple to unleash a swarm of Shrike to bring hosts to her. She then returns and injures Flint to prevent her prisoners from escaping.
S.H.I.E.L.D. prepares an assault on the Temple to rescue their friends and stop Izel, convincing Sarge to go with them and use his rage against Izel. In preparation for the fight, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents equip themselves with Sonic Barrier Cuffs to prevent Izel from possessing them and anti-Shrike bullets made out of Shrike Daggers' material. During the flight, Melinda May suggests to Quake that there could be a way to separate Sarge from the body he is possessing and bring back Phil Coulson. The team finds the Zephyr One, leaving Piper behind to prepare it for takeoff.
Deke Shaw reveals that the only way he was able to craft so many Sonic Barrier Cuffs was because he secretly brought his company's staff inside the Lighthouse. Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons also discovered that he stole the design of the Remorath teleportation device and created a portable version of it. Fitz reluctantly agrees to finish its design, but as an argument erupts due to Shaw expressing his frustration that no one seems to like him, Shaw angrily transports himself inside the Temple of the Forgotten before the device is completed.
Shaw gives Rodriguez, Mackenzie, and Flint the Sonic Barrier Cuffs, enabling them to escape from Izel. He then remains behind to handle the Shrike hosts that have begun to arrive in the temple, while the three others leave and find the Zephyr One. Flint is left in the care of Piper, who informs Mackenzie that Sarge has arrived with Quake and May. Meanwhile, in the temple, Shaw manages to avoid the Shrike hosts and sees Izel singing a song, activating the Di'Allas so they will open the portal. Shaw is later forced to flee from the temple as he cannot repel all the Shrike hosts, and he is directed to a Quinjet to wait for extraction.
Outside the temple, Quake, May, and Sarge take down several Shrike hosts, but there are far too many of them for the team to be able to infiltrate the temple. Quake thus leaves to create a distraction and gets the hosts to leave the surroundings of the temple. While they wait, May and Sarge discuss May's will to bring Coulson back, and he insists that it is not possible. Quake retreats to the safety of the Zephyr One, but she has been followed by hosts who invaded the plane and attack as Quake and Mackenzie argue over Sarge's allegiance.
May and Sarge confront Izel in the Temple and attack her, but it quickly turns out that Sarge is unable to kill Izel with his sword due to his subconscious acting against it. Sarge is then taken between Izel and May, with the former trying to persuade him to return to his old persona while May is persuaded that Coulson is somewhere inside Sarge and that his love for S.H.I.E.L.D. could be the key to their victory. Eventually, though, it is Izel that Sarge listens to, and Pachakutiq regains his memories and stabs May with his sword, mortally wounding her and sending her through the portal opened by Izel.
