- "I mean, everyone in S.H.I.E.L.D. has flown a Quinjet. Literally everyone. I hear take-off is a piece of cake."
- ―Daisy Johnson to Daniel Sousa[src]
The Quinjet is a jet used frequently by S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers. As the successor to the Quadjet, Quinjets possess unique flight capabilities thanks to their unique wings which contain turbine fans. While most Quinjets are lightly armed, Project Insight introduced a series of Quinjets with a wider range of weapons.
History[]
Development[]
The Quinjet is an advanced aircraft used by S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers for personal transport and aerial combat. There were several Quinjets active since the events leading up to Loki's invasion of Earth.
In 1995, Captain Marvel and Nick Fury made use of an early version of a Quinjet called the Quadjet, during their trip to Mar-Vell's Laboratory orbiting the Earth. The Quadjet was piloted by Captain Marvel and Maria Rambeau, who was able to shoot down and kill a Starforce member, Minn-Erva, in pursuit.[1]
Chitauri Invasion[]
Following Loki's arrival on Earth and theft of the Tesseract, S.H.I.E.L.D. was put in a state of high alert, assembling various members of the Avengers and launching their Helicarrier, which carried a handful of Quinjet on board. A Quinjet was used as the transport that brought Steve Rogers and Phil Coulson aboard the Helicarrier.
In Stuttgart, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, and several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents arrived in a Quinjet to intercept a public attack by Loki. Romanoff attempted to take Loki out with the Quinjet's forward turret but couldn't make a clear shot. Tony Stark later hijacked the Quinjet's speaker system to play "Shoot to Thrill" as he made his entrance and swiftly took Loki out. However, as they were on their way back to the Helicarrier with their prisoner, the Quinjet was intercepted by Thor, who was able to enter after Iron Man opened the loading hatch at the rear. Thor then was able to make off with Loki.
A brainwashed Clint Barton and several mercenaries disguised as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents used a stolen Quinjet to attack the helicarrier and free Loki. During the attack, Hawkeye was captured, and several of the mercenaries were killed; however, Loki was able to escape using the stolen Quinjet.
Shortly after the attack on the Helicarrier, Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye "hijacked" a Quinjet in order to get to New York City and head off Loki and the invading Chitauri; however, shortly after arriving, they were easily shot down by Loki and were forced to make an emergency landing.[2]
Project Insight[]
During the S.H.I.E.L.D. initiative: Project Insight, an initiative created to monitor worldwide activity and provide a pre-emptive strike against global threats before they could escalate, a new series of Quinjets with heavier weapons capabilities and scramjet engines were created to serve on the Project Insight Helicarriers. One such Quinjet was used against Captain America as he tried to escape from the Triskelion after being branded an enemy by Alexander Pierce.
During the Battle at the Triskelion, another Insight Quinjet attempted to shoot down Falcon, only to inadvertently blow a hole in an Insight Helicarrier's underbelly for Falcon to enter. On the grounds of the Triskelion, legitimate S.H.I.E.L.D. pilots attempted to board their Quinjets to support Captain America, but most were destroyed by the Winter Soldier, who took the last one to fly up to the Helicarrier to stop Captain America.[3]
Battle at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy[]
A squadron of Quinjets confiscated by Tomas Calderon were used to evacuate students and agents from the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy during the HYDRA Uprising. They landed at the Iliad after its occupants won the Battle on the Iliad.[4]
The New S.H.I.E.L.D.[]
Getting the Cloaking Technology[]
- "We have soldiers willing to sacrifice, but they need weapons. The enemy has the advantage. We need one of our own."
"You risked that for a Quinjet?"
"No. For what we can do with one." - ―Phil Coulson and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Phil Coulson sent Melinda May, Skye, and Antoine Triplett in to a Government Storage Warehouse that had multiple quinjets in order to steal one. He wanted it for the cloaking technology that Quinjets have after he decided that using Leo Fitz to build cloaking technology for the Bus was inappropriate, given his condition.[5]
The cloaking technology was reverse-engineered by Alphonso Mackenzie, with advice from Leo Fitz for the Bus. Afterwards, Coulson left a confrontation with Glenn Talbot in a cloaked Quinjet.[6]
Undercover[]
After Jemma Simmons' cover in the HYDRA Laboratories was blown, Bobbi Morse had to drop her own cover, as the head of security, to help Simmons escape. After fighting off multiple HYDRA soldiers using her battle staves, Morse and Simmons fled to the roof, where according to Morse their escape route was located. They then jumped off the roof, landing on a cloaked Quinjet piloted by Antoine Triplett. They then flew back to the Playground.[7]
May's New Plane[]
Melinda May piloted the Quinjet to Okinawa, Japan to follow a lead about Toshiro Mori. Afterwards, she flew the plane to Bruges, Belgium, but they arrived too late to save Noelle Walters and her team from being massacred by Marcus Scarlotti and his mercenaries.[8]
Coordinating her field agents between Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Boston, May piloted the Quinjet during S.H.I.E.L.D.'s hunt for Grant Ward after he escaped federal custody.[9]
Surrounded[]
Dividing into two teams, Phil Coulson took Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons, Alphonso Mackenzie, and Bobbi Morse with him to San Juan to search for the city that matched the Words of Creation in a Quinjet, leaving Melinda May, Skye, Lance Hunter and Antoine Triplett on the Bus to help in the protection of Raina.
Aboard the plane, Mack talked to Morse about Hunter's knowledge of their mission and if he was replacing Isabelle Hartley on it; she told him that her ex-husband knew nothing about it and she did not want him involved.
In Puerto Rico, the silence between Fitz and Simmons grew too uncomfortable for Mack, so he chose to inspect the landing gear to give them privacy. Tearfully, Simmons attempted to explain why she left Fitz months ago to go undercover; he interrupted, explaining that he could not work with her. She asked if he was quitting S.H.I.E.L.D. He further explained that he wanted to work for her and made her leader of the science team.
Four Quinjets owned by HYDRA surrounded the Bus when Grant Ward traced Raina's tracking device to find her for Daniel Whitehall. Ward promised that the HYDRA Quinjets would not fire upon them if they relinquished Skye and Raina to him. Whitehall, however, told Agent 33 to order them to attack.[10]
Grant Ward took one of the four Quinjets to San Juan to reunite Skye with her father. Meanwhile, the other three attacked the Bus. The HYDRA pilots believed that they had destroyed the plane when Antoine Triplett and Melinda May combined their piloting skills to fool them by cloaking after setting off an explosion.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjet was landed atop the Ponce de León Theater; Phil Coulson led his agents in the Battle for the Kree City from there.[11]
Coulson's Usage[]
Pursuing the whereabouts of Calvin Zabo, Phil Coulson and Bobbi Morse took a Quinjet from Ohio to Wisconsin to battle the Slicing Talons.[12]
Coulson took Skye to the Retreat in a Quinjet; during the trip there, he refused to tell her where they were going or to get her upset, lest her uncontrollable powers knock them from the air.[13]
Two Quinjets filled with agents were sent to the Retreat to capture Skye. On the Quinjet that Tomas Calderon and Bobbi Morse rode, Calderon warned the agents not to engage Skye alone but to send up a flare; Morse told them to remember that Skye was a colleague and to use nonlethal force in apprehending her.
Skye saw the lights of the landing Quinjets as she fled the Retreat.[4]
Two Quinjets were sent by Robert Gonzales to capture Phil Coulson during the battle between their two factions of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson had alerted Gonzales to his presence at the Retreat, so that Coulson could capture one. Coulson and Lance Hunter tried to acquire the plane disguised as Gonzales' men but they were captured; Deathlok came to their rescue and captured a Quinjet and disabled the other with an EMP blast. Peterson then learned to fly the plane with his cybernetics, before receiving the order to find Grant Ward.[14]
Landing the Quinjet atop a building, Deathlok first picked up Leo Fitz before going to Mexico to get Grant Ward and Agent 33. With Lance Hunter, Phil Coulson and the others flew the Quinjet to Milwaukee in pursuit of HYDRA scientist List who was experimenting on, and in most cases, killing, enhanced people.[15]
Phil Coulson surrendered to the agents of Robert Gonzales and was put aboard the Bus; Coulson had, with Grant Ward piloting, his Quinjet land atop the Bus, so the two factions could reunite to compare notes, rescue Deathlok, and lead an Attack on the Arctic HYDRA Research Facility.
Melinda May allowed the Bus to be destroyed so that HYDRA would think that the falling Quinjet was debris; Coulson's Team, temporarily reunited, was aboard, leading the attack and rescue mission.[16]
Jiaying's Vendetta[]
Quinjets were deployed by S.H.I.E.L.D. carrying a peace convoy to Afterlife as the organization wanted to show that humanity and the Inhumans could coexist without incident. Robert Gonzales was chosen as the peace ambassador; Melinda May and Jemma Simmons went also in hopes to place as many Inhumans as possible on the Index.
Kara Palamas, disguised as May, piloted the Quinjet that Bobbi Morse boarded to go with the convoy; Palamas took Morse to another location to exact her revenge. The two women fought fiercely, with Morse winning, but as the exhausted Morse exited the Quinjet, she was shot by Grant Ward.[17]
Meanwhile, Jiaying ordered two of her subjects to commandeer one of the Quinjets at Afterlife; they then fired upon the building where Robert Gonzales' corpse was lying, making the populace believe that S.H.I.E.L.D. was attacking them and destroying the only proof of her deception. After this event, Simmons and Melinda May returned to the Playground with Calvin Zabo as a prisoner.
May and Lance Hunter used a Quinjet to get to the place where Morse's Quinjet landed and later to the location where she was held.[18]
After Coulson convinced Zabo to join him in the fight against the Inhumans, Coulson organized a squadron of Quinjets to fly to the Iliad which was hijacked by the Inhumans.
Jiaying planned to use her commandeered Quinjet to fly across the world and exterminate the Humans, but also to create new Inhumans by releasing the Terrigen Mist from the Terrigen Crystals. Eventually, her plan failed thanks to Skye, who threw the Quinjet, with the crystals inside, into the ocean with her powers.[19]
Recruitment Drive[]
The Quinjet was used to transport Alphonso Mackenzie, Lance Hunter, and Daisy Johnson as they escaped from the Advanced Threat Containment Unit on the streets of Seattle, Washington. The Quinjet accompanied the Containment Module containing Joey Gutierrez as it met with the Zephyr One in the sky.[20]
A Quinjet was sent to pick up Andrew Garner so he could psychologically assess Joey Gutierrez for the Caterpillars team. Though he enjoyed having a private jet retrieve him, Garner complained that the seats were uncomfortable, as Daisy Johnson and Alphonso Mackenzie greeted him on his arrival.
Meanwhile, Phil Coulson, Bobbi Morse, and Leo Fitz took a Quinjet to England on the advice of Elliot Randolph, who was assisting them in finding Jemma Simmons.[21]
Flying Underwater[]
Melinda May flew a Quinjet with Alphonso Mackenzie, Lincoln Campbell and Yo-Yo Rodriguez on it to an island in the Pacific, where Hive was about launch a nuclear missile full to Earth's atmosphere. In order the would not be detected, although the Quinjet was not designed for it, May flew it underwater to the island. The Quinjet reached the destination and they continued with the plan.[22]
Avengers Quinjet[]
First Quinjet[]
The Avengers developed their own Quinjet to use as their main vehicle to travel around the world and take out threats such as HYDRA. It appears to be larger than an average S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjet with more offensive capabilities and an improved cloaking system. These Quinjets also had wings that folded inwards and around the main body of the jet so that they could fit inside the Quinjet launch bay of Avengers Tower.
In 2015, the Avengers used their Quinjet to travel across the world to find the Scepter and later to deal with Ultron. Hawkeye piloted the Quinjet during the Battle of Seoul as they were pursuing Ultron and a truck containing a prototype of Vision. Hawkeye fired the Quinjet's Gatling gun on Ultron to lure out the Ultron Sentries and Black Widow infiltrated the truck, stealing the chamber that would hold the body of the future Vision. Hawkeye then managed to load the chamber into the Quinjet's cargo bay. During the Battle of Sokovia, Ultron managed to take control of the Quinjet and used its weapons systems against Hulk and Black Widow and then to kill Quicksilver, who was protecting Hawkeye, who in turn, was protecting a child named Costel. Not too long after that, Hulk made his way to Ultron, and after throwing Ultron out of the airlock, took control of the Quinjet and flew to an unknown location.[23] Using the Quinjet, Hulk ended up leaving Earth and eventually crash landed on the planet Sakaar.[24]
In 2017, Thor landed on Sakaar. After he met with Hulk, Thor found the Quinjet but as he was preparing for take-off, Hulk entered and started tearing the Quinjet apart. As he was doing so, video footage of Black Widow managed to calm Hulk down and he reverted to Bruce Banner. However, since the Quinjet was damaged, Thor and Banner abandoned it.[24]
Second Quinjet[]

- "We found it. Their Quinjet's in hanger five, north runway."
- ―Falcon to Captain America[src]
In 2016, Tony Stark utilized a second Quinjet and flew his team to the Leipzig-Halle Airport. After seeing the Quinjet, Steve Rogers' team tried to get to it, but were stopped by Stark's team. Eventually only Rogers and Bucky Barnes were able to get on the Quinjet and flew to the HYDRA Siberian Facility. Rogers then used the Quinjet to get to the Raft, where he freed Scott Lang, Wanda Maximoff, Sam Wilson, and Clint Barton, and brought them back home.[25] Rogers, Wilson, and Natasha Romanoff took the Quinjet to Parkhar several weeks later so that they could fight the Needle. When they realized that the Needle hid their base underground, they exploded the fuel cylinders from the Quinjet to draw the Needle out. They took the Quinjet out of Parkhar[26] and continued to use it over the next year.
In 2018, after being warned by Bruce Banner, Rogers, Romanoff, and Wilson used the Quinjet to travel to Edinburgh. After they rescued Maximoff and Vision, Wilson piloted the Quinjet back to the Avengers Compound. After making a plan, Wilson piloted Rogers, Romanoff, Maximoff, Vision, Banner, and James Rhodes in the Quinjet to Wakanda and landed on the helipad in the Golden City. Afterwards, they, along with Thor and Rocket, left Wakanda and flew back to the Compound.[27]
In 2023, Romanoff took the Quinjet to travel to Tokyo in order to recruit Barton. She and Barton then entered the Quinjet and flew back to the Compound. Later, the Quinjet survived the bombing, and was used by Barton to return to his home in Iowa. It was then left with Barton.[28]
Alternate Universe Versions[]
Framework[]
- "If HYDRA's sending a Quinjet, you can bet there's a hit team aboard."
- ―Antoine Triplett[src]
Virtual recreations of the Quinjet were created in the Framework and were operated by both HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D.
After declaring war on HYDRA, S.H.I.E.L.D. recovered a Quinjet and brought it to the Playground. A year later, Grant Ward piloted the Quinjet after volunteering to bring Jemma Simmons and Phil Coulson to Ogygia, where Holden Radcliffe was rumored to reside. However, when Madame Hydra and The Doctor arrived, the three were forced to escape the island with the Quinjet.[29]
A HYDRA Quinjet brought Melinda May to the HYDRA Enlightenment Cultivation Center, later firing at the Isolation Building and leaving the area as the building collapsed.[30]
Simmons and Antoine Triplett used the Quinjet to in order to reach Ivanov Oil Platform. and then to return to base.[31]
Triplett brought Coulson, May, Simmons, Daisy Johnson and Alphonso Mackenzie with the Quinjet to the location where they could return to the real world.[32]
Zombie Apocalypse[]
In an alternate 2018, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Iron Man and Black Panther flew on a Quinjet to San Francisco in order to respond to the national health emergency. They landed the Quinjet on the Golden Gate Bridge.[33]
Age of Ultron[]
In an alternate 2015, Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton flew the Quinjet to the edge of Earth's atmosphere in order to evade the nuclear missiles being launched around the world. After the missiles had ceased fire, they flew the Quinjet to Siberia and landed by the HYDRA Siberian Facility.[34]
Variants[]
S.H.I.E.L.D. Variant[]
The Quinjet is a unique, hybrid-wing aircraft with similar flight capabilities as modern VTOL aircraft and serves as a personnel transport and versatile attack vehicle. The Quinjet is able to reach high speeds through two powerful jet engines located at the rear of the ship; each turbine is able to produce 63,000 pounds of thrust.[35] It possesses two large, angle-adjustable rotors, one housed in each wing, which grants the aircraft its vertical take-off and landing capabilities. The Quinjet also has adjustable wingtips that can be angled down to intensify the lift of the wing rotors and modify the movement of the ship. This gives the Quinjet unprecedented maneuverability as it can make full stops mid-air, hover in place, and make incredibly tight turns compared to conventional aircraft.[2]
The Quinjet also has a variety of weapons, the most prominent of which is a GAU-17/A Gatling Gun mounted on the underside at the front of the jet.
Additionally, Quinjets have retro-reflective panel technology similar to the Helicarrier, which grants the Quinjets high-level stealth capabilities and near invisibility from a far enough distance.[5]
Project Insight Variant[]
The Quinjets utilized on the Project Insight Helicarriers are more heavily armed than standard Quinjets, utilizing missiles mounted onto each wing, as well as smaller missiles and racks of large missiles. However, they still utilize the same Gatling gun mounted on the forward underside of the jet and a configuration of three GAU-17/A Gatling guns mounted on the nose. Due to its design specifically for Project Insight, the craft looks larger and bulkier than its counterpart, apparently due to its combat role.[3]
Avengers Variant[]
- "Could be the Quinjet. But with Stark's stealth tech, we still can't track the damn thing."
- ―Nick Fury to Natasha Romanoff[src]
The Avengers Quinjet shares some similar characteristics with its S.H.I.E.L.D. predecessors. Like the later versions of S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjets, the Avengers variant possesses cloaking technology, but far more advanced. The technology allowed the plane to land silently, although Natasha Romanoff did not think it was silent enough. It possesses similar weapon systems, such as a GAU-17/A Gatling Gun. It is also equipped with advanced auto-piloting systems and a cargo bay capable of carrying the entire Avengers team. A motorcycle can be carried and released from a ventral port.
Alternate Versions[]

Trivia[]
- In the comics, the Quinjet was originally an Avengers-exclusive vehicle designed by Black Panther. It got its name from the five jet thrusters used for primary propulsion.
- The Quinjets used in Captain America: The Winter Soldier are slightly different from the ones used in The Avengers, as they are more heavily armed and lack the adjustable wingtips found on the older Quinjets, giving them a shorter wingspan. The new Quinjets also had linear aerospike engines across their tail, in addition to the usual turbojet engines. The aerospike engines were used for lower speed stealth flight, in combination with the turbofans in the wings. Following the HYDRA Uprising, the variant seen in The Avengers have been seen in the possession of both remaining S.H.I.E.L.D. factions, as well as the United States Armed Forces. The variant in Captain America: The Winter Soldier has also been seen in the possession of HYDRA.
