- "Where is this guy now?"
- ―Steve Rogers to Tony Stark[src]
The Salvage Yard is a location in South Africa on the African Coast where Ulysses Klaue holds a ship full of stolen vibranium from Wakanda.
History[]
Acquisition[]
Ulysses Klaue sent a buyer 6 short ranged heat seeker missiles and was traded the Churchill in return. Klaue was upset with this deal as he viewed the ship as nothing more than rusted parts, threatening the buyer to "make it right" or have a missile fired at them.[1]
Battle at the Salvage Yard[]
- "Upon this rock I will build my church. Vibranium."
"You know, it came at great personal cost. It’s worth billions." - ―Ultron and Ulysses Klaue[src]
In 2015, while inside the Churchill, Ulysses Klaue was on the phone with one of his buyers, threatening to kill him for selling him poor quality missiles before hanging up and continuing another conversation with a minister about their deal. Before he could conclude his deal, the lights in the facility were cut out; believing that he was about to be attacked, Klaue took a hand gun and readied himself for a firefight. Before he could react, Pietro Maximoff ran into the room and disarmed him, leaving the bullets on Klaue's desk.
Klaue found himself face to face with Pietro and his twin sister Wanda Maximoff. Klaue remained confident, mocking the pair for their youth. Klaue explained he was aware of who the pair were, noting that he was saddened to hear of the death of Baron Strucker, teasing the pair when he noticed that they were not aware of Strucker's murder. Klaue continued to mock and belittle the pair before stating he only deals with the man-in-charge of their organization.
The man-in-charge turned out to be the android named Ultron, who threw Klaue from his office window and told him he needed his Vibranium for his new body. Klaue handed Ultron the Vibranium he required, but reminded him of its incredible worth and the personal cost he had been through to get it. Ultron responded by filling Klaue's bank account with billions of dollars, which he hacked from financial databases on the internet. Their alliance was cut short when Klaue noted that Ultron was quoting Tony Stark, questioning if he was another one of Stark's designs.
Klaue's remark threw Ultron into a fit of rage as he deemed it an insult to be compared to Stark. Ultron impulsively sliced off Klaue's left arm. Klaue, in incredible pain, was ultimately spared bleeding to death when the blow from Ultron's heated hand cauterized the wound. Ultron apologized immediately afterwards. Klaue could only stare in shock and horror at the assault, momentarily unable to comprehend what had happened. Ultron's rage continued to build however as he kicked Klaue down the stairs.
Tony Stark, Thor, and Steve Rogers then arrived and confronted Ultron and the Ultron Sentries. Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff, and Clint Barton also arrived, but remained elsewhere in the building in order to ambush the Sentries. When Pietro joined the battle, Klaue ordered his soldiers to start shooting at the Avengers and the Sentries, as he made his escape. After Rogers defeated the Sentry he was fighting, he went to fight Pietro, but was knocked out.
Maximoff found Romanoff, Rogers, Thor, and Banner and used her telepathic powers to produce hallucinatory visions on them, incapacitating them leaving Stark to fight Ultron alone. Barton shot a pulse arrow at the Sentries, and was soon targeted by Maximoff, but reacted quicker, and stuck an electric arrow to her forehead. However, Pietro arrived and pushed him aside, tending to his sister. Stark managed to defeat Ultron, as Banner turned into the Hulk due to his vision and broke out of the Yard. Following this, the Avengers left the Yard as well.[1]
Alternate Universes[]
Killmonger's Betrayal[]
In an alternate universe, James Rhodes, under orders from Tony Stark, went to the Salvage Yard in order to meet with Ulysses Klaue to make a deal on Vibranium. However, before the deal was completed, T'Challa arrived and attacked Klaue's soldiers, killing Klaue's mercenary, and forcing Klaue to hide. T'Challa then confronted Rhodes but told him they were not at odds with each other.
Erik Killmonger then arrived and used a Sonic Taser to kill T'Challa. Rhodes then asked Killmonger why he would do that, but was promptly killed as well. Killmonger then placed the taser in Rhodes' hands to frame him for T'Challa's death. When Klaue returned, Killmonger told him that they better leave as to not get caught.[2]
