- "You know the dreams I dread before I go to sleep. The good ones, the happy ones... the hopeful ones. Because then you wake up and you’re back to your own life."
- ―Tandy Bowen[src]
Tandy Bowen is a former street thief who gained the ability to channel Lightforce in the aftermath of the collapse of the Roxxon Gulf Platform, during which she and Tyrone Johnson, whose powers are connected to Bowen's, were exposed to a mixture of Lightforce and Darkforce. Bowen remained ignorant of her powers for years until they began to manifest and she understood how they were connected with the perception and expression of hopes, taking on the name Dagger.
Progressively learning to master her powers, Bowen decided to use them in her quest for justice, as she wanted to expose the accountability of Roxxon Corporation in the destruction of the oil rig, and clear her father's name as he had been scapegoated by the company after he died the night of the collapse. Over the weeks, she built a very strong friendship with Johnson, but came to discover that her father actually was an abusive husband, which caused her to briefly experience a regression in which she returned to her drug abuse habit and she abused her powers, feeding off others' hopes instead of simply reviewing them. Nevertheless, Bowen regained her senses and worked with Johnson and Mina Hess to stop the Terror in New Orleans, exposing Roxxon Corporation in the process.
In an attempt to rebuild a sound relationship with her mother, Bowen joined a group therapy session. This caused her to progressively uncover a vast operation of human trafficking orchestrated by Andre Deschaine. Bowen herself nearly became a victim of this criminal ring before being saved by Johnson, later assisting him so he would be rescued from the Dark Dimension, although it caused James Connors to be released as well in the process. Bowen then worked with Johnson, with the assistance of Brigid O'Reilly and Mayhem, to end the threat of D'Spayre. Confronting him in the Dark Dimension, Bowen was able to overcome the trauma of the true nature of her father, and both she and Johnson were able to overpower D'Spayre.
With this new victory achieved, Bowen and Johnson decided to leave New Orleans to help others who might need their assistance. This eventually caused them to meet and ally with the Runaways, helping them to rescue Alex Wilder from the Dark Dimension, although Bowen expressed her doubts about his true nature.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Tandy Bowen was born the daughter of Nathan and Melissa Bowen. She was named after her father's first computer.[1] Although Tandy believed her family was happy, that was not the case. When she was a baby, Melissa and Nathan put her to bed, but argued about Nathan's lack of care for Tandy. When Tandy was older, she often listened to music on full blast as to not hear her parents arguing. On the way to ballet practice, Melissa forgot her keys inside, leaving Tandy alone to get them. Tandy then overheard Nathan and Melissa arguing inside and decided to leave herself.[10]
Losing Her Father[]
The First Light[]
At the age of nine, Bowen was at ballet practice when she fell doing a dance move. The instructor gave her a backhanded jab before Bowen got up and started again. Once practice was over, Bowen got outside and watched as her classmates got in their own cars to leave. Bowen then got out a phone and dialed Roxxon Corporation. Asking for her father's extension, she told him she was ready to be picked up.
While waiting for her father, it started raining. Instead of seeking shelter, Bowen danced in the rain until she saw a car pull up. Happy to see her dad, Tandy jumped into the back on the car.[1] As the two drove back home, Nathan got a call from a colleague[2] who was talking about problems with the Roxxon Gulf Platform. Tandy could not understand, but could tell it was bad when Nathan got tense. As Nathan talked to the man, Tandy looked off into the distance only to see the gulf platform explode.
This explosion caused Nathan to veer towards a truck and then swerve back, sending the family over the guardrail and into the water below. Tandy struggled to get out of her seat, but managed to reach her father as the water filled the car. However, her father was dead on impact. Tandy then looked up to see the truck falling down towards her. She screamed and panicked as she tried to get out. As she screamed, she noticed black energy moving towards her.
Bowen reached out towards the energy and locked hands with someone. The next morning, Bowen woke up on the beach side with a little boy by her side. Bowen looked around before taking the boys hoodie for rememberance and then leaving. She walked down the street and eventually got possession of a phone where she called her mother.[1]
Assets Seized[]
Roxxon Corporation wrongly blamed Nathan Bowen for the destruction of the Roxxon Gulf Platform by portraying him as a rogue scientist who lost control of his experiments. Tandy and her mother Melissa Bowen were blindsided by this. Tandy spied from the stairs as Melissa talked to Peter Scarborough, who seized her belongings. Melissa then took a pill out of stress, jump starting her into substance abuse.[1]
A Life of Crime[]
Liam Walsh[]
Over the next decade, Bowen turned to a life of crime, without the support of either parent, which led her to meet Liam Walsh, whom she began a romantic relationship with. Bowen would trick rich men into bringing her back to their place so she could drug them and she and Liam Walsh could steal their valuables. Bowen also stopped living with her mother, who now resides in a trailer home and moved into St. Theresa's Church which has long been abandoned to stay away from her mother and engage into her drug abuse away in isolation but she would go to her mother's place to store the money she had stolen in secret. Bowen kept Tyrone Johnson's hoodie as a source of comfort in her times of struggle.[1]
Rick Cotton[]
- "Let's ransack this bitch."
- ―Tandy Bowen[src]
One night, Bowen and Liam Walsh started work on their next victim. Bowen arrived at a club where Walsh was guarding. Once he let her in, she walked straight to the bar, asking for the usual. As Bowen drank, she looked around the room and met eyes with a man named Rick Cotton. The man approached her and the two talked before going back to his home. Once there, Bowen grabbed a bottle of O'Harren's Scotch Whisky and poured to glasses, one for each. The two talked as they went to the couch.
Before she knew it, Cotton made a move by placing his hand on her thigh. The two kissed, but Bowen got uncomfortable and pushed away. Cotton backed off of her and asked if they were going to have sex because if not, he did not want to waste his time. He then leaned in again, but Bowen got up. Instead the drank standing up. However, Cotton started feeling woozy as he realized that Bowen drugged him. Once Cotton collapsed, Bowen let Walsh into the home, telling him they were going to raid the house.
Noticing something was wrong, Walsh asked if Bowen was okay to which she brushed off. The two then ransacked the home. Bowen looked through information and passports before laying her hands on tickets to a 57th St. Ballet Company recital. She paused before moving on. Once they finished, Bowen was driven back to her home where she kissed Walsh. Once Walsh was out of view, Bowen turned around from her fake house and went to St. Theresa's Church. She did some drugs before putting her earbuds in and falling asleep.[1]
A Discovery[]
- "Wait, are you that kid? From the beach?"
"The beach?"
"After the storm?" - ―Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson[src]
The next morning, Bowen and Liam Walsh went to a shop where Walsh planned to sell their earnings. Bowen waited impatiently only for walsh to return with a dud. She angrily told Walsh he was played. However, she got to keep the ballet tickets. Disappointed, Bowen went to her house and walked in, making sure her mother was not home. She then took a photo of Melissa's schedule before looking in the fridge, only to see there was no food.
Bowen then grabbed a knife and unscrewed the ceiling vent to uncover her pink bag from her childhood, where she kept all of her money. She stashed her new money in the bag and left. That night, Bowen went to a party at Culper Woods where she planned to find yet another victim. Making her move on a kid her age, she walked into him and spilled her drink. PLaying it off and flirting, Bowen used her cap to dry off his jacket before asking his name: Tyrone Johnson. She then said goodbye, successfully pick pocketing his wallet.
Bowen walked over to Walsh to show him what she did. Suddenly she heard Johnson calling her name as he realized what she did. Bowen ran away through the woods as Johnson chased her. She then made it to an alley where she was cornered. Johnson grabbed her, but this set off a huge bolt of light, similar to the one from the Destruction of the Roxxon Gulf Platform. Bowen got up only to see her hand was glowing white. She looked back at Johnson in fear. As the two got up, Bowen shakily asked if he was the kid from the beach eight years ago. Before he could answer, he touched her, causing Bowen's hand to light up again. Bowen screamed in fear before running behind a rock and hiding.[1]
Hopes[]
- "Dude, look, I'm sorry I jacked your stuff."
"Oh, yeah? How sorry? Oh, that's how it's gonna be, huh?" - ―Tandy Bowen and Rick Cotton[src]
Bowen made it to Liam Walsh's truck in a junkyard where the two had sex. As Bowen got off of him, she talked with Walsh. She then went to her house where she went to grab her bag. However, as she did so, she heard her mother enter the home. Panicking, Bowen went to put the bag away, only to slice open her hand with the knife. Angry, Bowen stabbed the knife into the wall before wrapping her hand and walking out. She met her mother, who wasted no time and getting to the O'Harren's Scotch Whisky. As the two talked, Melissa noticed the makeshift wrapping on Tandy's hand. In order to see it, Melissa touched Bowen, causing another anomaly.
Tandy soon saw a flash of white and was brought to a vision. She watched as Melissa helped a younger Tandy get her ballet shows on before walking over to Nathan Bowen to talk. Tandy had been watching Melissa's hopes. When she awoke, Tandy immediately asked Melissa if she saw the vision, but her mother did not. Tandy then broke down in tears as she remembered her father.
That night, Bowen decided to attend the ballet recital with the tickets she stole from Rick Cotton. She arrived at the Orpheum Theater in a white dress. Before she walked in, she noticed the ballet gowns and envisioned her former dream of being a ballerina. She was then escorted to her seat, but upon seeing it, Bowen realized she did not belong. She looked around at the fancy theater before leaving. However, she made her way to the catwalk where she climbed it. Bowen then took off her heels and sat on the catwalk above the stage. This way, she could watch the ballerinas from above. This brought her great joy as she was able to enjoy in peace.
Following the concert, Bowen walked outisde where she noticed Cotton and his gang waiting for her. Bowen tried to escape but was forced into an alley. There, Cotton enacted his revenge. He began unbuckling his belt to rape Bowen despite her wishes. This caused great fear as Bowen unknowingly unleashed a Lightforce dagger which stabbed Cotton, causing him to flee. A scared Bowen then looked down at the dagger in her hand.[1]
On the Run[]
Bowen realized she would need to leave town whether or not Rick survived his wounds. Liam brought her to Elmer, who could give her a new identity for a price. Bowen's mother, however, stole her money to buy drugs with her new boyfriend. After stealing the money they needed from a wedding reception, Bowen broke up with Liam and drove off towards her new life. Liam was soon arrested by Brigid O'Reilly, the detective that was investigating the assault on Rick. Bowen hung up on Liam when he called her begging for help. Soon afterwards, however, Tyrone Johnson suddenly appeared in front of Bowen's car firing a gun. Bowen lost control of her car and crashed into a tree.[7]
After the crash, Bowen bluntly stated that she hoped to never see him again. Still trying to avoid the cops, she ditched the car and boarded a bus, then fell asleep. She entered a dream created by her hope perception use on Johnson, where she found a younger version of the latter, who wanted his brother to not steal a particular car radio with his friends. The dream jumped to a present-day Johnson, wanting to kill the cop that murdered his brother. No matter which weapon he chose, the outcome was always the same, with Johnson on the run for murdering someone. It wasn't until Bowen pleaded with him to find a better way that Johnson chose to handcuff Connors. When she woke up, Bowen decided to come clean with Brigid O'Reilly about her situation, in exchange for protection. She headed back to her abandoned church, where she met Johnson, wanting to talk with her.[11]
Getting Answers[]
The two began to tell each other their own personal tragedies, believing that fate always keeps them together. The conversation turned sour as their differing beliefs caused Johnson to leave Bowen abruptly. She later headed to a pier, equipped with some heavyweights and jumped off to commit suicide, but quickly resurfaced, noticing she willingly drew a light dagger.
Bowen continued to visit her mother's trailer and noticed that she was still seeing Greg Pressfield. The latter tried to get to know Bowen better and she accepts his attempts while also trying to get information out of him involving Roxxon at her home and at his office. While helping him cook, she saw through Greg's mind using her hope perception and realized that he genuinely cares for Bowen and her mother and after Melissa broke up with him, Bowen suggested that she try again with him. When she came by to Greg's office later that night, however, she saw him get assassinated and his office burned down. The next day, she took out whatever evidence Greg had left in his safe in order to start clearing his father's name.[12]
Bowen began to infiltrate Roxxon by becoming an intern there and was able to get invited to a party where all the executives will be attending. She used her hope perception on each one, noticing their similar desires to overthrow Peter Scarborough, the company's Chief Executive of Risk Management. Bowen confronted Scarborough on a separate occasion and saw that his hopes are to profit off of those who have survived the oil rig explosion that happened 8 years ago, but decided not to kill him.[8]
Bowen continued to find answers by becoming an intern for Mina Hess, the daughter of Ivan Hess, one of Nathan Bowen's colleagues under the alias Liz. The two traveled to the swamps to fix a pipeline with Bowen constantly asking about Mina's father and whether or not she could visit him. Mina quickly caught on to her behavior and deduced that she was Nathan's daughter leaving in frustration. Bowen followed Mina to a hospital wanting to apologize but discovered that Ivan had been in a catatonic state after the oil rig exploded and offered to help him. She attempted to enter Ivan's mind, only to find it blocked by a dark aura. Unable to do anything at the moment, she went back home where she suddenly found Johnson as he started to cry over a friend of his that had gotten killed.[9]
Saving Ivan Hess[]
After a brief grieving period, Bowen asked for Johnson's help to enter Ivan Hess' consciousness, explaining she cannot do so without his powers. He agreed and the two entered his mind and actually met him there, seemingly oblivious of his own life and daughter. They discovered that he was reliving the moment the oil rig exploded, resetting every time. Inside the rig, the two fought off oil rig workers who have been affected by the first explosion, dubbed Terrors by Hess, and find out from the latter that the only way for him to wake up is to close off the valves in the core room. Bowen found that her father was constantly calling Hess and used this as an opportunity to talk to him, leaving her very distracted. Johnson became worried and decides to leave, but she refused, still wanting to converse with Nathan.
By the time Johnson came back shortly after, Bowen had been reliving Hess' memory for over two hundred times, enough to become more proficient with her daggers. When Bowen refused to help, he threatened to unplug the phone every time, causing her to act hostile and attack him. Finally, Johnson suggested that she ask her father a question only the real Nathan would know, and she did so by asking who was in the back seat of his car. Her "father" answered there was no one, causing her to tear up and finally accept the reality of it. Using his daughter's cookies, Bowen was able to revitalize Hess' memories and he agreed to help them escape. They realized that the valves needed to be closed by Hess himself and he did so while they protected him from the Terrors. With the task accomplished, they both exited his mind and Hess finally broke out of his catatonic state.[2]
Making A Move[]
While visiting Ivan Hess, he informed her that her father had kept other files exemplifying Roxxon's guilt, located at a separate bank. Bowen followed the tip and was able to get her hands on them.
On the anniversary of her father's death, Bowen decided to visit Tyrone Johnson's house while playfully teasing him. She met the latter's parents, giving condolences on the day of their eldest son's death and left with the mother's Roxxon card, allowing her to enter the company's main office building.
She managed to sneak through the building undetected and shut down the power. Then, she confronted Peter Scarborough and tied him up in an unfinished floor. Bowen explained she had evidence that proves her father's innocence and was willing to use it, while a skeptical Scarborough asked if she truly knew what type of person Nathan Bowen was. He then offered to buy the information from her, but she refused, leaving him for dead in the collapsing construction site.
Later that night, Bowen and her mother headed to the gulf to light a sky lantern to honor Nathan, with Johnson present out of respect. At the same time, Bowen and Johnson went inside Melissa's mind, projecting a simultaneous fear and memory, where they found the widowed mother looking at a theater screen of her and Nathan together. Bowen decided to cut through the screen and the two entered Bowen's old house, where the real memory of Melissa and Nathan was shown. After accidentally pouring coffee on some files, Bowen's father smacked Melissa and the two exited her mind. Shocked at what they've seen, they still lit the lantern and let it float into the sky. Shortly after, she called Scarborough and accepted his bribe, hiding it in an effigy in the church.[13]
The Hero's Regression[]
After learning of her father's abusive nature, Bowen reverted to her old lifestyle of robbery and drugs. She even used her newfound powers of Hope Absorption, including her friend Mina Hess, out of anger and frustration.
Using Scarborough's money, Bowen bailed out Liam Walsh, who was certain that she would've gotten out of town or moved on. She took him back into her home, explaining that she wanted to be with him again and the two kiss. She entered Liam's hopes and was ready to take it away, only to stop when Tyrone Johnson unexpectedly appeared there as well. Furious, Bowen confronted Johnson at his school, only to be intercepted by Evita Fusilier, whom she accidentally touched. She proceeded to try to take away Evita's hopes, but the latter surprisingly stopped her, forcing her to leave. Bowen and Johnson later got into another argument, with Bowen lashing out at his inability to face reality and the other condemning her borderline sociopath behavior, and the two bitterly leave.
Bowen returned to the abandoned church, only to find Liam gone and most of her stuff, including the money inside of the effigy, stolen. She then headed back to her mother's house to try and talk about her father. She soon realized that Peter Scarborough contracted someone to hunt down Bowen and found her mother being held hostage.[14]
Madness at Mardi Gras[]
Bowen tried to reason with Ashlie, claiming that if she dies, she'd lose the Roxxon files, distracting her long enough for Bowen to lunge at the hitwoman and injure her, forcing her to flee. She then ordered her mom to go to someplace safe, stating that she needs to go and help others.
She quickly headed to Mina Hess's lab, already under attack by Terrors. Bowen managed to save Hess, who explained that all the valves she implanted across New Orleans are emitting the energy that is creating the Terrors and they needed to shut it off. They returned to the Roxxon building and confronted Peter Scarborough, learning the pipelines could all be shut down if they headed to the core energy compartment building and shut off the valves. Bowen thanked him for showing him a glimpse into his hopes and somehow leaving him in a catatonic state.
The two wandered the streets as Ashlie returned to kill Bowen, only for more Terrors to appear. The two headed to a Mardi Gras warehouse to hide and seal all entrances, but Hess was attacked and transformed into a Terror. She chased Bowen throughout the warehouse but was quickly subdued by Tyrone Johnson, who teleported in and tasered her.
Bowen and Johnson lamented the loss of Hess and Billy Johnson's cloak back at the church just as Evita Fusilier arrived. She explained their fate as the Divine Pairing; every time the city is in catastrophe, two people miraculously save everyone, but at the cost of one of them dying. She then left, wishing she could have helped them more. Noting Johnson's gloom from his now ripped cloak, Bowen gave back the hoodie he had lost after the oil rig exploded, saying that Johnson needs it more than she does. The two then headed out to the core energy compartment.
They made their way through New Orleans, only to be ambushed by more Terrors. They were aided by Brigid O'Reilly and the two pressed on. Upon arriving, James Connors came up from behind them with a shotgun, but was easily subdued by the two. Bowen looked over the building roof and saw Johnson who was about to drop Connors, but doesn't. Johnson met up with Bowen and decided not to risk Bowen's life and thus warps into the compartment, saying goodbye, much to the latter's disbelief. He managed to close all the valves but the residual energy was still rising. Bowen cut through the metal with her dagger, telling Johnson that it's also her fate to save the city, regardless of what the outcome is. The two then held hands, absorbing all the light and dark energy inside. They warped out and released it into the sky. Exhausted, the two smiled at each other, relieved they're both still alive, taking the image that they looked like after the explosion so long ago.
Bowen moved back in with her mother and showed her a newspaper article saying how Roxxon was responsible for the events that had happened recently. She met up with Johnson, who had just recently moved into the church and brought him supplies. Johnson had to move in because he was still wanted. He noted that he didn't know she could care and Bowen replied in a cheeky manner that she was learning and the two smile.[6]
A Normal Life[]
Helping Tyrone[]
Eight months after saving the city, Bowen returned to a more normal life. She resumed her ballet lessons, as well as attending a support group for abused women alongside her mother, helping each of them her own way. She would occasionally drop by St. Theresa's Church to check on Johnson while also giving him textbooks and movies to watch.[15] She also checked up on Mina Hess, who started research on what happened that night.[16]
Helping Mikayla[]
One day, after her latest group therapy session, Bowen noticed the newest participant, Mikayla Bell, had accidentally dropped her wallet during her introduction. Afterwards, she returned the wallet and struck up a friendship with Bell, but not before taking a picture of her driver's license in order to find her.
That evening, Bowen followed Bell back to her home, watching an argument between her and her boyfriend, Jeremy. Once Bell had left, Bowen broke into the house while Jeremy was asleep, lightly trashing the living room with her daggers and carving a warning on the wall. Bowen went to group therapy session today and was glad to hear that Bell was doing well with her and her boyfriend. But she was quick to react when she said her boyfriend claimed to have been attacked by three muggers and held all of them back on his own, knowing he's lying.[15]
Human Trafficking Investigation[]
The Club Rougarou Massacre[]
Meanwhile, she had found Tyrone Johnson trying to stop a drug trade on his own and intervened when he was being attacked. When they went they went back to the church, the two argued saying with Bowen saying that she should've gone to her for help with the Johnson arguing that she didn't want to drag her into his vigilantism after hearing about the normal life she's been having the last couple of months. Bowen left frustrated with the latter having caused more harm but he goes to her during her private ballet practice to try and make things right.
The two go into a local club with Johnson sneaking in a recorder inside a meeting room he knows the people responsible for the drug trade are and to try and use it as evidence without directly doing anything. After waiting, they see the men enter the room only to see through the window they're being attacked and immediately rush into help.[15] They found all the men dead and call Brigid O'Reilly. Johnson then pointed out a vudu signature on the ground. When O'Reilly arrived, she got mad at the two teenagers because she told Johnson to stay away from it. She opened the door and told them to go or else she would arrest them. However, opening the door caused the vudu scripture to wash away. Outside, Bowen and Johnson argued about people's choices.[17]
Meeting Andre Deschaine[]
Bowen went to another session where Mikayla Bell talked about her boyfriend. Bowen got mad that Bell was taking advice from her friend. Bowen yelled at her saying if he hits her, she leaves, it is not that hard. This yelling caused Bell to leave. Her mother yelled at her outside and they argued. Bowen then went to Jeremy's house and they argued. Afterwards, Bowen went back to practice her ballet to blow off steam.
Later, she met with Lia Dewan and they argued about their outburst until the leader, Andre Deschaine came in. They talked about Bell's sudden disappearance. The two walked outside and talked about Deschaine's past. He talked about finding a young woman who needed help and felt good about helping her, so he continued. He then asked about Bowen's past, but she suddenly saw a vision of Nathan Bowen walking towards her. This caused her to get scared and cause a power outage. As Deschaine stood there confused, Bowen ran off.
Bowen kept walking until she found someone singing over human trafficking victims. Deschaine finally found her. She asked if the victims were from the town and Deschaine said they were. Bowen sadly wondered why no one was helping. Deschaine said if someone like her, a blonde white girl went missing, people would be searching. However, in a town with brown girls, nobody cared, that was the world. Deschaine then got a call saying that Bell was found, overdosed. She was at the hospital. Bowen rushed there and found Dewan, who told her not to yell when she saw her.
Bowen walked in to see the unconscious Bell. She apologized to Dewan, thinking she pushed Bell to the point of overdosing. Bowen walked over and touched Bell to see her hopes. She found two windows looking out onto a bar. When she went to the other side of the windows, she found a vision of Bell being human trafficked. Bowen let go screaming, causing the lights to burst. She rushed out to a doctor, asking who brought Bell there. The doctor said it was a private ambulance who did not sign their name.[17]
Meeting Mayhem[]
Bowen walked out and searched for the bar, finding the sign. She got to a tow yard, seeing the ambulances inside. Suddenly, she was approached by Brigid O'Reilly who let her in, weirdly changing her stance from earlier. They found a man who ran. O'Reilly went on away while Dagger chased him the other way. As she ran, the lights flickered. The man got into an ambulance and drove away, but O'Reilly stopped him. He started going to other way, but Dagger was there. She used her trauma and inner thoughts to create a spherical ball of Lightforce, throwing it at the ambulance.
The ambulance crashed and O'Reilly grabbed him. He told them he did not know anything and just drove. However, there would be more human trafficking shipments tomorrow. O'Reilly told Dagger to go around the back. Dagger complied, but only found Tyrone Johnson and O'Reilly teleport in front of her. Confused to see O'Reilly, she ran back to find a second O'Reilly (who she was with earlier), killing the man.[17] Johnson realized the other O'Reilly was the killer at the club. The doppelganger aimed her weapon, but Dagger and O'Reilly were teleported away by Cloak before she shot.[16]
Rescuing the Girls[]
In the church, Bowen started asking questions to Brigid O'Reilly, mad that there was another one of her. However, O'Reilly was overwhelmed and said it was not her. Tyrone Johnson got Bowen to stop pressuring O'Reilly. He then asked who they could see who could explain. They visited Mina Hess. Hess showed them her experiments, saying that a rat duplicated after contact with energy from the night that the terror struck. One of the rats was overly aggressive, killing the other one.
Johnson wanted to keep O'Reilly safe, but Bowen argued that they needed her. Bowen then asked where O'Reilly would go if she was hiding. O'Reilly brought them to a rundown hotel. They opened the door to Mayhem's apartment and found playing cards taped over the walls as a research wall. Bowen looked around, finding many missing flyers of girls. Bowen realized that Mayhem was trying to find the trafficked girls just like Bowen was doing. Bowen then remarked at how the wall looked like Johnson's. In response, Johnson brought Bowen out into the hallway, asking if she thought Johnson was like Mayhem. Bowen said that was ridiculous because Mayhem killed all of those people in the clubs, Johnson saves people. Johnson asked how she knew and Bowen said he saved her.
They were then called into the room by O'Reilly, who explained the card method to them, whom she learned from a reporter in New York. Through the cards, they found the next location. They got to Glitter Gutter Club telling O'Reilly that if they do not come out soon, enter and start shooting. Johnson asked if they were really going to enter a strip club. Bowen sarcastically remarked that you enter things by walking into them. She then heard commotion inside and ran to find Mayhem beating up men. Dagger tried to get her to stop, but Mayhem said there was a human trafficking shipment coming and they could stop them.
Johnson tried to get Mayhem to calm down, but she threw a man at Johnson leading Bowen to throw a dagger. Mayhem easily caught the dagger, saying Bowen would have to try harder than that. She then threw Bowen across the room and left. They chased Mayhem to the human trafficking site only to find the driver dead, they were too late. However, to the side were human trafficked girls who claimed to be saved by Mayhem. Seeing the girls, O'Reilly's demeanor changed and she started taking charge. Bowen started freaking out as she realized how horrible their lives were and that even if they stop one, there were hundreds more. Johnson argued that killing people was not the solution, but Bowen was fed up, saying the driver deserved it.
They followed O'Reilly to the precinct with the victims. Bowen walked over to one of the girls, asking of she could hold her hand. However, like Mikayla Bell, she could not see her hope. There was nothing except the girl crying. She had no hope. She asked Johnson to try. He did so and found her fear to be her getting carried off in an ambulance. However, he found a building in the vision called Little Per Live.
They arrived at the building and found guards outside. Johnson went in to see what it was like. Two guys in the back and two in the front. They thought of ways to tackle it. Johnson went in by himself despite Bowen being worried. He returned saying the girls were in the back. However, he was very tired from teleporting, which worried Bowen. She suggested they wait for Mayhem, but Johnson disagreed, saying she was shoot first ask questions later, which was what got Billy Johnson killed.
Dagger then fired up a lightforce sphere, temporarily blinding the guards as Johnson went in and teleported girls out two by two. Dagger was approached by a man with a shotgun and forced to walk forward. Suddenly, she saw a trailer truck coming at her, she dove out of the way. The truck was driven by Mayhem, who took a gun to try to kill the men. She casually walked in, firing at everyone. Her firing led to Johnson, who leaped in front of one of the guards. He then absorbed Mayhem, just like he did to Connors.[16]
Journey Through the Darkforce[]
Dagger and Cloak returned to the church. Dagger was scared about what had happened to Mayhem, thinking she went inside of Cloak. However, Johnson explained that the same thing happened to James Connors and he thought they were teleported somewhere. Dagger got mad, saying that Johnson was hiding it from her when he could have used Connors to be free. Johnson said he had no idea how to get Connors out, so Bowen thought of the idea to go into Johnson and explore whatever place they went. Johnson said that he was scared both times it happened, so Bowen needed to scare him.
She started forcing his thoughts of trauma on him while throwing daggers. He finally admitted to his fear. That if he brought back Connors, he would be too scared to stop him. This opened up the portal and Dagger walked in. She used a dagger to see through the pitch black place. She called for Johnson's name, but found no answer. She then saw pennies on the ground, leading her to a gas station.
Bowen approached the station and found a man on the ground. She ran over only to find a young Tyrone Johnson. She asked if he was alright and he turned the question on her. She said she walked through a door that her friend made. He knew it was Johnson, the Divine Pairing. She jokingly said that he got that channel here. He said they got all of the channels. Bowen figured he was not Johnson and he said he was Papa Legba. She asked if he saw Mayhem: blood with a green jacket. Legba told her that he had seen blood and a green jacket, but it was only worn by half a woman.
Legba asked what she wanted and Bowen said she needed to get her out. Legba figured that it was not all she wanted her for and told her the way out is through the gauntlet of transactions. She found a coin operated wayfinder and looked in, but did not see anything. Legba explained that she needed to pay to play, meaning she needed to give up her lightforce. He further said that she could have it anytime, but if she took it out while in the dark dimension, she would have to leave. She dropped the dagger into the binoculars and it shot out a coin. One side had a symbol of a dagger while the other was a symbol of a cloak. She turned around to find Legba gone. She also unknowingly took away Johnson's powers.
Bowen looked through the binoculars and found herself teleported to The Esplanade, a mall. Bowen walked into the quiet mall filled with neon light. She found blood on the ground before being attacked by Mayhem, who pinned her against a wall, asking what she was doing there. Bowen claimed she wanted to know what happened to the girls, but Mayhem refused as she already offered a team up. Bowen explained that Mayhem needed to get out with her as she could not get out by herself because she was half a person. Mayhem told her there was no way out anyways.
She showed her a map of the mall that she claimed was wrong as the mall stopped at the mirrors up ahead. They approached the mirrors and Bowen saw multiple alternate reflections of herself. One seemed to be a doctor, another a goth girl, a ballerina, one with a dagger, and a fancy one. Touched the mirror, merging the reflections and opening the mirror. They continued on, going down an escalator while talking about Mayhem.
Mayhem noticed one of the stores, which seemed to have someone living there. They walked in and found countless cloaks on the wall, showing that they were scared of Johnson. Bowen found a police badge on the counter and hid it from Mayhem before she claimed nothing was there and they needed to get moving. Although, she knew James Connors was there. She hid it because she knew Mayhem would kill him, which is what Johnson did not need. Bowen then found a record shop with a cover relating to Mikayla Bell. She walked in, seeing the gallery and concluding that they were victims of the human trafficking.
Bowen listened to Mayhem's talk about the human trafficking when she suddenly found a gallery with Bowen's name on it. However, they were still wrapped in clear foil. Curious, Mayhem unwrapped it and put the disc into the record player. The disc played and Bowen saw her father and mother with a baby Tandy. The two parents argued about Tandy. Melissa thought Nathan was not pulling his own weight, but he made an excuse that Roxxon Corporation had him stressed. Mayhem shut of the disc, annoyed with the song that was playing. Bowen then took another disc and put it in.
In this one, she found a younger her listening to music on full blast to drown out the sound of her parents arguing. Bowen turned off the disc and reached for another, but Mayhem stopped her saying she did not need to hear it. However, Bowen insisted that she will hear one last one then they will go. The next one showed Tandy off to ballerina class, but Melissa ran back in to the house, forgetting the keys. As young Tandy waited outside, she heard her parents arguing with each other. Young Tandy then walked out herself. Bowen slammed the disc onto the ground in anger. However, she found Mayhem to be gone.
Bowen ran to Connors' store and found Mayhem hanging Connors. She punched Mayhem, who punched her back. Bowen the broke the rules, releasing her lightforce dagger. She then cut Connors loose and held Mayhem with her dagger to her throat. The dark dimension smoke started coming after Bowen. Mayhem asked what was happening and Bowen said she broke the rules. She then got swept up and back into the church where she found a very exhausted Johnson. They turned around to see Connors also made it back and he broke out of the church.[10]
Betrayal[]
Bowen and Tyrone Johnson argued about her bringing back James Connors although Bowen did not mean to. She then opened her phone to find her mother frantically texting her because there was no reception in the Dark Dimension and she thought she was hurt. Johnson told her to see Melissa, but Bowen wanted to stay and help with Connors. However, Johnson insisted that she go.
Tandy returned home and told Melissa that she was helping Johnson. Melissa remarked at how she liked him. She then talked about having drinks with her friends which was good for her. She also mentioned a super hot doctor who she got his number from. Tandy got mad, saying that Melissa only wanted someone who could provide no matter how hard he hit. Melissa claimed she never stayed with Nathan because he could provide, she stayed because she was scared and Tandy needed a father who loved her.
Tandy argued, telling Melissa not to turn it on her. Melissa claimed she was not and it was entirely her fault. Tandy repeated what she said to Mikayla Bell. If he hits you, you leave. Tandy then angrily walked out. She went to the place of her meetings and met with Andre Deschaine. He talked about rumors from the victims saved of a girl who looked like an angel and a boy who moved like a shadow. Bowen thought that was cool and wanted to talk to the victims because Brigid O'Reilly thought that somebody was targeting the girls.
Deschaine told her it was a bad idea. He knew she wanted to help, but it was inappropriate as they probably did not want to relive it. Deschaine then got a call that he had to take. Instead, Bowen talked to Lia Dewan. She even admitted to her past life as a druggie who stole. Dewan surprisingly told her that she had that life too. Bowen asked if Dewan could come with her, which Dewan gladly did.
She then went to a park where she met with Johnson. She waved at Dewan in the distance before talking to Johnson. Cloak told her he found Connors and needed to steal a file to clear his name. He wanted Bowen's thieving to help. He then noticed Dewan watching them and decided to leave. However, Bowen stopped Johnson and explained to him that she needed Dewan's trust to help her. Johnson got mad, thinking Bowen was using him. He then left, leaving Bowen to cry.
Bowen and Dewan sat at the table and she comforted Bowen. Dewan talked about having knowledge with men who use and abuse. She explained that he ex lied to her and made her have sex with a man so that he could strike a business deal. One time, Dewan said no, leading Eric to hit her. Due to this, she said yes every time after that until she found Deschaine. Bowen said that Eric deserved justice.
Dewan told her he would not get justice if he owned the best grow house in the city. Bowen realized that Eric could know who trafficked the girls due to his relationships. She then asked where the grow house was. She arrived there and scouted out the location. She walked in holding her dagger, but only found marijuana. Eric then walked in thinking she was lost. He then swung a pickaxe at her, but she knocked him down. She then took care of more men before being pepper sprayed by Eric.
Bowen screamed in pain as she fired up a lightforce sphere and threw it into the air, temporarily incapacitating everyone. She then swung blindly at everyone, punching Eric. She asked him questions about the girls, but he said he worked alone. Bowen told him he could double security, but she would still come after him. She then left after knocking him out.
She walked out the door, limping and puffy eyed. Bowen was then approached by Dewan, who was worried she was going to go to the building. Bowen talked about choosing the fight back and refusing to be the victim so they could take away the power. Suddenly, an ambulance arrived. Bowen turned around only to scream in pain as she was tasered by Dewan, sending her into the trafficking ring.[3]
Losing Hope[]
A Perfect Life[]
Traveling in an ambulance, Bowen saw memories of herself in what she wished was her life. During the Destruction of the Roxxon Gulf Platform, the Bowen's fell into the water. However, a young Tyrone Johnson jumped in and saved the family. Later, a little Bowen and little Tyrone Johnson woke up to find Nathan Bowen and Billy Johnson greeting them, making sure they were okay.[5]
Years later, Tandy hugs Billy, Evita Fusilier, and the rest of her family before giving a toast.[3] She toasted to her hero, Tyrone, who had become a member of the NOPD. James Connors also arrived having mentored Tyrone. Tandy met with her parents before overhearing Otis Johnson and Connors talking about Tyrone. Melissa Bowen and Nathan approached Tandy telling her that his business partner wanted tickets to her New York City Ballet recital. Melissa and Nathan loved each other very much, opposite of real life.
Adina Johnson then sang for Tyrone while Tandy oversaw Melissa and Duane Porter dancing. Nathan then walked over to Melissa and touched her face. Tandy lashed out yelling at him not to hurt her. Confused, Nathan said there was confetti on Melissa's face. The whole party stopped and looked at Tandy. She then stepped out.
Tyrone found Tandy outside, asking if she wanted to go on a walk. They did so and talked about the day that they met. They then walked into a store where Tyrone claimed that she saved him too because Connors never arrested Billy due to the explosion. They cashed out, buying some ice. A man then hit on Bowen and got her mad. The cashier made a racist comment towards Tyrone before seeing he had a gun. The cashier got out his, thinking Tyrone was robbing him. Tyrone explained that he was a cop and went to get his badge, but Tandy had it. Tandy reached for the badge by dropping the bags of ice. This startled the cashier who shot. Tyrone reached for Tandy. When they touched, and explosion was set off. Tyrone jumped back engulfed in Darkforce while a Lightforce dagger emerged in Tandy's hand.[5]
Frightened Family[]
Tandy found herself in another wish where she was a Roxxon Corporation engineer. Melissa Bowen talked to Tandy about fixing Roxxon's problem. Tandy explained that it was not the case and Peter Scarborough just needed her to check some things. Tandy suddenly heard the siren of an ambulance before it faded revealing her phone ringing. Roxxon wanted her earlier.
At the Roxxon Gulf Platform, she asked where the machine shop was, but nobody answered. She then met with a colleague, Tyrone Johnson and his brother, Billy Johnson. They talked about the pressure analytics before their tyrant boss, Mina Hess scolded Bowen. When she left, Bowen asked Tyrone how to get to the core room. As they walked, Tyrone explained how he got the job, but Bowen stopped when she saw a man walking out of what looked like ambulance doors. She brushed it off and kept walking.
They got to the core room where Tyrone teased her about her very smart dad. Bowen then realized the dangerous pressure and warned Hess, who was very upset with Bowen, thinking she was overstepping. Bowen acted like she knew Hess, which even furthered her anger. Bowen explained that they could not stop drilling or three bad things were going to happen. Hess finally understood. Bowen then looked to her right and saw a man in a hat looking at her. She asked who they were, but no one else saw him.
Suddenly, the gulf started going into a meltdown. While they were shaking, Johnson and Bowen locked hands causing an explosion. They found Hess with equipment on top of her. They tried to find something to pry her out. Bowen suggested they cut her out, then looked down, surprised to find a Lightforce dagger in her hand. She used it to cut Hess out.[5]
All Alone[]
In another dream, Bowen walked around town telling people to save the shorebirds. She saw Liam Walsh and noticed money fall out of his pocket. She notified him and he claimed it was not his. They flirted and she told him about the shorebirds that were endangered ever since Roxxon Corporation moved to Pensacola. Walsh's girlfriend, Mikayla Bell, come to his side and was rude to Bowen.
Suddenly, Bowen nearly collapsed, blaming it on skipping lunch. However, she just used that to pickpocket Walsh's wallet. Walsh signed the petition before leaving. She called him the knight in shining armor. As she walked away, she looked at the money that she stole. She then felt like collapsing again before hearing Walsh call out for her. She ran away as she was chased by police.
When she got away, she found Tyrone Johnson stealing a car. She jumped in, telling him to drive. He refused, but had to comply when she pulled a knife on him. She was trying to rush Johnson along. Johnson claimed she did not have to pull a knife as he was not going to turn her over. Bowen repeatedly picked at her arm because of her need for her drugs. Johnson noticed and talked about his drug addict brother.
Bowen then got a flash of ambulance lights and started hyperventilating, saying nothing was right and she could not trust anything. She calmed down and asked how Johnson got into stealing cars. He explained that life happened. Bowen started talking about Walsh and his girlfriend, Mikayla Bell. She then realized that she was never told Bell's name; however, she still knew it, making her suspicious. She then called Johnson "Ty," without knowing his name.
Suddenly, the cops came and they sped up while Bowen started getting worried. She then saw the same mysterious man in front of them and swerved the car to the forest before covering her face with her daggers.[5]
Jam Session[]
Bowen was put into another vision where she once again asked other to save the shorebirds. She became suspicious and immediately went to Liam Walsh, saying that he dropped something despite that not happening. She then pointed out that Walsh was dating Mikayla Bell despite also never knowing that this time around.
Bowen then saw the mysterious man in front. She looked down to find Walsh's wallet in her hand. When Walsh went to get it, she told him to get away before accidentally taking out a Lightforce dagger. Bell called for the police as she had a weapon. Bowen decided to run and was eventually surrounded by cops. She then cut through a door where she found herself back onto the Roxxon Gulf Platform from the second vision. Mina Hess started yelling at Bowen until she ran through a curtain.
Bowen showed up in the first vision where everyone was telling her not to ruin Tyrone Johnson's big day. Nathan Bowen touched her, causing Tandy to see the vision when the cashier shot at her as well as when she saw the mysterious man. Nathan claimed Tandy was embarrassing them, causing Tandy to lash out at her father. Nathan said Tandy was just like her mother, a useless, good for nothing woman.
Tandy told him to shut up, causing her to find herself in The Esplanade. She walked over to a record, but was told by Andre Deschaine to not touch it. Bowen realized that Lia Dewan tricked her and that Deschaine was behind it. She also realized that Deschaine was collecting people's misery which caused her to throw a dagger at him. Deschaine easily absorbed it, saying he was collecting their despair. Despair is an absence of hope, he explained.
He further told her that he lost his hope one night and went to jump of a bridge into the water. However, he did not die because it was the same night as the Destruction of the Roxxon Gulf Platform, which gave him new found powers. Bowen looked down to find a record of her trapped in the car at the explosion. The album was titled, "Daddy's Little Girl." D'Spayre said that 90% of the time, he helped people that came to him. However, the 10% cannot be helped, so he stole their hope to help his despair.
He then claimed that Bowen did the same thing months ago when she stole people's hopes for her own benefit. Bowen claimed it was not true even though it was. She then took a dagger and smashed the record, thinking she released herself from her nightmares. However, unbeknownst to her, it was another trick. Bowen woke up in the ambulance with two daggers in her hands. She broke out and opened the door to find a car driving passed her.[5]
Tandy Without Tyrone[]
Bowen returned to the church where she found Tyrone Johnson, happy to find her. They met with Brigid O'Reilly, who called for backup. O'Reilly assured them that she will help. As O'Reilly talked to the cops, Cloak and Dagger teleported to Andre Deschaine. They immediately went to stop Deschaine, but Lia Dewan arrived holding a knife to Mikayla Bell's throat.
Bowen threw a dagger at Dewan, who dodged it, but freed Bell. As Deschaine lifted a gun towards Bowen, she tempted him to shoot her, saying that Johnson would just kill him anyways. Deschaine said that he saw her thoughts and hopes, she was not that person. Bowen explained that in those thoughts, she had no one, but here, she had one person. Deschaine said that he figured that part out too. He proceeded to shoot Johnson.
Bowen rushed over to Johnson, crying. Johnson died in her arms as she sobbed. Deschaine told her that there was nobody left and she should give up. Depressed and heartbroken, Bowen gave Deschaine her dagger, her hope, and her protection. In the real-world, Bowen was then led into Viking Motel with no hope.[5]
Finishing Off D'Spayre[]
Escape from the Viking Motel[]
Bowen woke up in a motel to see Andre Deschaine telling her not to get up too quickly. Bowen immediately started scolding Deschaine for putting her through the visions. Bowen asked where Tyrone Johnson was, but Deschaine reminded her that he killed Johnson. However, Bowen knew it was fake and manipulation. Bowen walked over to him and pulled out her dagger, only to find that it did not work. Deschaine told her that she needed hope for it to come out. Lia Dewan then knocked on the door, asking if she was ready.
Bowen was met by a woman named Del in another room who was somewhat like a slave. Bowen claimed they were holding girls against their will. In response, Dewan opened the door, telling Del that she could leave, but Del refused. Alone with Del, Bowen asked questions and tried to explain they were manipulating her, but Del wanted to be there. Del said that you get used to the bad parts. Bowen then walked out of the door and saw all of the women staying at the motel. Making her way out, she was suddenly grabbed by Dewan's bodyguard. Inside, Bowen realized that Del told on her. Dewan hen forced Del to inhale a drug and then blow it into Bowen's face, causing her to become unconscious. Del apologized before doing so.
Bowen woke up in a bed, unable to move. Dewan talked her through many dresses that she could wear and picked one out. She put the dress on the paralyzed Bowen while talking about how she met Deschaine. Bowen was then put to sleep. Waking up, she talked to Del, saying that she could not feel anything. Del apologized and Bowen told her she would have gotten out and saved everyone. Del explained that people who try to escape get either killed or locked up, it happened the other day. Bowen explained that they were not killed, but saved by Bowen and Johnson. She had help from the best person a girl could ever hope for. Del told her that hope does not exist.
Bowen told Del that she could not get out, but Del could. Del continued to put on Bowen's makeup and ignored her. Later, a hopeless Bowen sat as she waited for a man to come in and use her. As the man walked in, Bowen overheard Del and Dewan arguing in the other room. Suddenly, her dagger reemerged as she gained hope. She cut through the wall and grabbed Dewan, pulling her down. She then plowed through all of the rooms and took care of the men. She then broke through another wall, only to find Johnson. He asked if she was okay and she told him she was. Suddenly, Johnson collapsed, being engulfed in Darkforce energy. This energy teleported them back to the church, but Johnson still laid unconscious with smoke around him.[18]
Return to the Darkforce[]
Bowen cried for Tyrone Johnson to wake up before calling Evita Fusilier, telling her what happened so she could help. Bowen sat next to Johnson's body until he coughed, startling her. She checked his heartbeat, hoping he would wake up. Brigid O'Reilly then arrived saying she found victims. Bowen asked if they were okay, but O'Reilly was more worried about her. Bowen said she was okay, but Johnson was not.
Fusilier then arrived and Bowen explained that it looked like the portal to the Dark Dimension where she met Papa Legba. Fusilier perked up, saying Legba was a Loa who was also married to Chantelle Fusilier. She called upon Legba to open the portal. Fusilier then gave Bowen candy, saying that Legba has a sweet tooth and also may ask for something in return. Bowen and O'Reilly went to the balcony, joined hands, and jumped into the portal.
Arriving in the Dark Dimension, they made their way to the Roxxon Gas Station where they found Papa Legba in the form of a ballerina. However, O'Reilly saw him as Kenneth Fuchs. Bowen gave him the candy and he thanked her, allowing Bowen to look through the binoculars. Bowen realized that she could have done that instead of giving away her dagger. Bowen looked through the binoculars, but did not see the mall. Instead, she found an arcade place.[19]
Duel to D'Spayre[]
Bowen traveled to the place, leaving O'Reilly behind. Bowen saw one of the prizes in the arcade: a figure of Johnson. A man named Baron Samedi then asked if she wanted to play a game. Bowen instead said she was there for Johnson. Samedi said he resides over the dead. Bowen claimed Johnson was not dead, but Samedi said he was close enough as he sold away his worries. Bowen offered to give Samedi her worries instead, but Samedi said it was not that easy. Instead, Samedi said that if Bowen played Johnson's game and convinced him to leave, he would let both of them go.
He summoned Johnson, who was too busy playing a video game called Duel to D'Spayre. She tried to get him home and he said he would once he was done. He asked for her help and they joined. She watched as a video game version of herself and Johnson. The story commenced as it explained they got injected with radioactive heroin and had to find the man who did it. Bowen chuckled about the idea of radioactive heroin, but Johnson playfully told her to not ruin it.
While playing, Bowen tried to talk to Johnson, but he only wanted to play. They finished the 2D level and Bowen was happy to finish as they could go home. However, Johnson told her that was not the end. They then got sucked into the game where they became the players. Bowen immediately threw her daggers at two characters and argued with him as they beat the bad guys.
Bowen said it did not make sense, but Johnson said it did not have to, there were no street wars or worries, just fun. They got to level 2 where they tracked down the drug shipments. Johnson urged her on before taking out more men and making it to level three. Johnson remarked how good Bowen was at the game. In level 3, they were back at the Viking Motel. Bowen immediately wanted to go back, but Johnson said they could not. She was taken over by men as she was too scared to fight. Johnson told her they will fight and win.
Bowen cut through the wall, but broke down, nearly crying. She pleaded for Johnson to get out, but he refused. They went through the wall to the next room. Johnson was in a choke hold, but Dagger stabbed the man in the back. She asked if Johnson was alright and he told her yes, but it was the boss level now. D'Spayre suddenly walked though the door. Bowen could not take it anymore and left the game.
She hopped out, walking over to Samedi saying his game sucked. Samedi told her to hate the man who chose it. She then pleaded to Johnson, who was worried that they had to go back to the beginning. Bowen told him it was not real, but he was tired of losing. He explained that in real life, the only payoff was pain, he did not want that. Bowen told him what was real: he was dying. There was his mother, Fusilier, and her. She asked why Johnson he would save her. He said because he could not imagine his life without her.
She told him that she felt the same way and D'Spayre made her see a life without Johnson. She would rather fight a hundred times with him, then fight one time without him. So if he was staying, she would. Samedi asked what Johnson's choice was, but it was too late. Suddenly Samedi saw a bouquet of flowers, explaining that someone traded a bride of his life. He then let them go as Fusilier agreed to marry Samedi in exchange for Cloak and Dagger.
Bowen returned home to see her mother. However, all she found was alcohol, pills, and restaurant take out cartons. Bowen sadly picked up after her mother and slumped down to the ground crying over her mother's return to alcoholism. Johnson teleported to her, sat down and assured her that they would find Deschaine.[19]
Helping Lia[]
Bowen talked to Tyrone Johnson, who tried to find Andre Deschaine through a veve. When he came up empty, he asked Bowen if she wanted to talk about what had happened. She refused, so they separated to find leads. Bowen called her mother, apologizing, but Melissa did not pick up. She then texted Mikayla Bell, who also did not respond. Mayhem walked up to Bowen, saying a call came in. They left together.
While driving, Mayhem told Bowen that most victims had been arrested and others went missing. The ones who were arrested starting humming random notes. They arrived on the location of the call and found Lia Dewan unconscious in a field. Bowen convinced the police to hand Dewan to them so they could get the information about Deschaine. Mayhem asked what would happen if Dewan did not tell her information. Bowen said it was the same thing she would do if she does tell her: kill her. Mayhem remarked that she did not peg her for the murdering type. Bowen told her she did not either.
In the church, Bowen touched Dewan to see her hopes. However, she had none as Deschaine took them. Bowen returned and talked to Mayhem about what she had found. Bowen summons a dagger to kill Dewan, but Mayhem stopped her saying that Johnson got the hope out of a victim and could do the same here.
Bowen contemplated what to do when Johnson arrived. Bowen said there was a way to find Deschaine through Dewan's mind. Johnson really did not want to go, but decided to join. Inside, they approached a door similar to Ivan Hess' mind. They jumped in and found Dewan in a hospital. They watched as Dewan was offered a job by Deschaine. Johnson wanted to go back, but Bowen said they had to keep going.
They opened another door to find a young Dewan playing the cello in front of a crowd. They remarked at how hopeful Dewan was. Bowen approached Dewan saying that she needed to help a friend and asked for Dewan's sheet music. Dewan graciously gave it to her. As they left, Deschaine went through Dewan's mind as well and approached Bowen. Deschaine explained that he wanted an audience. One that could give him so much despair that he could hit a blue note. A blue note would make him a god. As he rambled on, Cloak and Dagger left.
In the church, Mayhem asked what was going on and they explained that the whole city would end up like Dewan without them. Johnson soon left to take care of the gang war. With him gone, Mayhem went to kill Dewan, but Dagger had a change of heart after seeing her memories. Mayhem told her to move, but Bowen did not. She took out a dagger to arm herself. She then charged at Mayhem, who flipped her over. The two fought for a while until Mayhem got the upper hand, planning to slice Bowen's throat with her nails. However, she stopped and said that she would keep Dewan alive. However, if anything happened because of Dewan, it would be Bowen's fault.[20]
Fight at Club Delight[]
Bowen rushed Lia Dewan to the hospital and Tyrone Johnson teleported to her. She told Johnson not to scare her, but he had news. The gangs said that Andre Deschaine operated out of Club Delight. They teleported away to the club. They walked in and saw only music playing. Bowen thought the gang leaders played Johnson and tried to leave before it as to late. As they left, Bowen noticed a plaque saying the original club was burned down, this was a new location. Johnson then teleported them to the old location where they found Deschaine playing the trumpet in front of many people including Mikayla Bell and Melissa Bowen. The people were standing still and unresponsive.
Johnson saw Deschaine's veve glowing, realizing Deschaine was close to his goal. He yelled at Bowen to throw a dagger at him, which she did. Johnson absorbed the dagger and teleported to Deschaine, sending it at him. Deschaine was stabbed and fell to the ground. However, everybody including Deschaine suddenly disappeared. Johnson and Bowen then heard the faint sound of a trumpet playing throughout the city.[20]
Taking on D'Spayre[]
Cloak and Dagger investigated further to find Andre Deschaine's unconscious body on the stage, but no sign of the people. Even though Deschaine seemed gone, they still heard the trumpet, meaning Deschaine was alive. They decided to go to Evita Fusilier. At the store, Johnson said that Fusilier wanted nothing to do with them. Bowen explained that she meant romantically. Fusilier then opened the blinds saying she could hear everything they were saying.
Inside, Fusilier flipped cards, revealing what they needed to do. All she saw in the distant future was despair. In order to stop Deschaine, they needed to go to the Dark Dimension. At the church, Fusilier nailed Johnson's cloak to the ground. She used a veve to open the cloak to reveal a doorway. Fusilier explained that it would remain open as long as a candle that she lit did not blow out. Fusilier would protect the candle while Cloak and Dagger went in.
The Dark Dimension was pitch black. Bowen used her dagger to light the way to the Roxxon Gas Station where they called for Papa Legba. However, they only found the place destroyed including the way finder, meaning they could not get to the record store. Bowen collapsed to the ground and they talked. Bowen thought she was not strong enough. Johnson gave her a pep talk, saying she was the strongest person he knew. Johnson then told her to make a veve with coins.
As she did, Johnson smiled and looked over to his right to see The Esplanade. As they walked in, they noticed the windows were broken as if someone was trying to get in. However, Dagger noticed the glass was on the outside, meaning someone was trying to get out. They walked through the mall to find even more destruction. They approached the mirrors to find many versions of themselves, just like before.[4]
Facing Her Father[]
They went through the mirror, donning a cloak and white dress respectively. The duo finally made it to the record store only to find there not to be any records. They followed the trumpet music to a door where they found D'Spayre playing music to a crowd of captured people. Deschaine stopped and talked to them. Bowen threw a dagger, but was sent to a version of her home where she was met by Nathan Bowen.
She asked where Deschaine and Johnson were, but Nathan only acted like her real father. Dagger stuck up for herself telling him not to talk to her like he did not do what he did. Nathan claimed it was a different story than that. Tandy brought out her dagger to arm herself. Nathan got mad asking if she thought it was easy to run a family. Tandy told him it gave no excuse to raise his hand at a woman. When he tried to reach for Tandy, she slashed his hand away. He told her she could not hurt him.
As she backed away from her father, he claimed her friends were all gone. She said one friend was still there. She yelled for Johnson, making her wake up. She looked to see an unconscious Johnson, but fell back into the spell again. She emerged at Eric's Growhouse where Nathan met her again. She began hearing Johnson's voice calling for her. She walked, trying to follow his voice. She ended up at the Viking Motel where she saw Deschaine, telling her to stop fighting it. She ignored him and opened a door at the same time as Johnson to see D'Spayre.
He told them that the only place to be was in their own heads. Johnson brought up how they always seemed to figure each other out better from other sides. So, they decided to switch opponents. Bowen charged at another version of Tyrone Johnson. She punched Johnson, but he easily dodged her. Johnson called himself a perfect version of Cloak, but she said he was only half of him. Bowen then put up her dagger, allowing officers to grab Johnson. She stuck up for Johnson saying that he always stood up for himself and he was nothing like this version. Johnson got away and she chased him down the hallway.
She continued to scold this Johnson saying he was not as good as the real Johnson. She brought up how Johnson saved her, yet this version could not. As she went to stab him, D'Spayre grabbed her hand, saying that was enough of that. She was then put into the Viking Motel where she sat in sadness just like she did when she was captured. D'Spayre told her it was time to return to her fear. Nathan then met with her. She stood up, telling her father off. Nathan said she was too afraid to face him and too afraid to tell Johnson about the Viking Motel.
However, Dagger said that she learned that she was not afraid. She summoned a long lightforce sword and held it to Nathan's throat saying the things that he did would not effect her and all she could do was level up and be better than him, Deschaine, and the world. Nathan said he would always be a part of Tandy and she agreed, but she got to decide how much he was a part of her. She sliced Nathan multiple times saying that in a world where the most important thing in her life was an A and the second was a B, she knew where she would file him under. Nathan then disappeared as her fear of him did.[4]
Defeating D'Spayre[]
Bowen and Johnson woke up. She immediately threw a dagger at Deschaine's trumpet. Cloak then teleported to D'Spayre, but was stopped. Bowen threw a lightforce sphere at him, remembering that he got migraines from bright light. She then threw many daggers at the people in the audience imbuing hope into them so they could wake up. D'Spayre then told them they were out of tricks, but Johnson said they had a few. He then teleported Bowen so she came out of him. She then jumped and stabbed Deschaine in the heart while Melissa, Bell, and Mina Hess held him down.
With D'Spayre defeated, they entered his mind. They found a saddened Deschaine sitting. Bowen searched his records for his most played and loved song. She played it for him as she scratched the record with her dagger, leaving Deschaine to sit with his broken song. They then ran away as The Esplanade collapsed. They returned to the church through the portal to find Fusilier and Mayhem.[4]
A New Purpose[]
Leaving Town[]
Bowen asked for a favor from Mayhem, to have Asa Henderson arrested to clear Johnson's name. She then returned home and cleaned up with her mother. She then hugged Melissa as she packed. Bowen made it to the bus and sat in a seat to leave the city and save victims of sex trafficking. While looking out the window, Tyrone Johnson approached, asking her to move over.
Bowen explained that Mayhem told her that there were women found dead near the shore. Johnson and Bowen decided to work together to help others. Bowen asked Johnson if she thought they could be heroes. Johnson answered with another question, waffles or pancakes? Which is what she asked him before they went to the Rougarou Club. Bowen told him waffles was the obvious answer. They held hands as the bus drove away from New Orleans.[4]
Rescuing the Runaways[]
Months later, Cloak sensed a great deal of dark force. He teleported Dagger to Los Angeles. They emerged in the Hostel and saw a woman named Nico Minoru. They asked who she was and what she did.[21] Minoru armed herself thinking Bowen and Johnson worked for Morgan le Fay. When they said they had no idea who that was, she explained that her friend, Alex Wilder was stuck in the Dark Dimension. Bowen did not really trust Minoru, but agreed to help.
Johnson teleported them to save her other friends, who were captured. Dagger made her way through Wizard security and attacked Geoffrey Wilder. However, she was told that Wilder was a person they wanted alive, even if it did not seem like it at the moment. Bowen then created a lightforce sphere and knocked him into a wall instead. Before new enemies arrived, Cloak teleported everyone to the Dark Dimension.[22]
Saving Alex Wilder[]
When they got there, Cloak and Dagger blindly followed Nico Minoru's lead as they tried to find a sorcerer named Quinton the Great. However, all they found was blood and swords. They then walked towards a door to get out, but Karolina Dean reminded everyone that last time they stepped through the door, they got split up. Cloak and Dagger held hands so they were not split up. Luckily, this did not happen as all of them were met with a wrecked Los Angeles in front of them.
They all walked down the street and found AWOL's men, who attacked. They ran into an alley and were saved by Quinton, who had found them. Quinton then told them to go through a passageway. When they did so, he explained that Alex Wilder was in the top floor of a building. As they walked in, they heard Quinton dying behind them. Minoru led the group as Bowen talked to Dean. She believed Minoru to be reckless. Dean agreed, but said she trusted Minoru.
Suddenly, there was yelling from Gert Yorkes. The three women turned around to find Yorkes, Chase Stein, and Cloak to be gone. Bowen wanted to go and find Cloak, but Minoru told her not to as they needed to get Wilder before they start forgetting things. However, she assured they would look for everyone on the way. As she turned around, Bowen touched Minoru, seeing her hopes. This was a vision of her and Dean getting married.
When she let go, Minoru got very angry with her, but Bowen said she could now trust Minoru and she would follow. Minoru told her never to do that again and Bowen assured her she would not, feeling a little bad for her actions. She walked with Dean and tried to explain herself, but Dean sided with her lover. Bowen just said that Minoru is a person they could trust. As they walked more, they looked out the window and saw Stein and Yorkes getting surrounded by AWOL's men, but no Cloak. Minoru backed up, telling them to do the same. She then yelled "sail." The Staff of One allowed them to walk across smoke into the other building.
They battled AWOL's men as well as a zombified Quinton. Johnson soon returned from teleporting enemies away. The two of the rejoiced. They fought further, but were unsuccessful as Quinton was disappearing before their eyes and also absorbing her daggers. When Quinton grabbed Dean, Minoru yelled at Bowe to throw her a dagger. She then took the dagger and infused it with dark energy, turning it solid. She then stabbed Quinton with it.
The group moved along and made it to Wilder, who was happy to see everyone, but confused as to who Cloak and Dagger were. Bowen assured him they were just helping. Johnson told everyone to hold hands so he could teleport them back. Dagger grabbed Wilder's hand and saw his hopes. Frighteningly, it was of him, having obtained everyone's powers. She yelled for them to stop, but it was too late. Back on Earth, she said they needed to go back, worried about Wilder, but the group trusted him. Cloak and Dagger then left, but Dagger hugged Minoru and told her to keep the solidified dagger close.[22]
Personality[]
- "She came out amazing. Despite all you piled up on her doorstep. She came out a fighter. She's smarter than you. She's better than you. She's gonna rise out of the ashes of your anger. You just watch."
- ―Cloak to Nathan Bowen[src]
As a child, Tandy Bowen was a lively, optimistic girl who loved her family unconditionally and they loved her too. She fostered a great love of ballet and wished to be a dancer.
After the death of her fatherNathan, Bowen's life had crumbled apart for her and her mother. With her mother turning to drugs to cope with the aftermath of Nathan's death and financial trouble, Bowen became pessimistic, emotionally distant and felt that the world owed her for her pain, which she uses as an excuse for stealing. In addition, as a result of her having trouble dealing with her circumstances she turned to Xanax and developed an addiction. Due to her experience as a thief, she became a good liar as well except to Liam Walsh. Whenever she was faced with a problem, Bowen admits to solve it by running away and also cannot commit to relationships as she appears to be looking out mainly for herself.
Bowen is very vengeful as she takes her frustrations out on the rest of the world by robbing others who she doesn't believe deserve what they have most often. She even commits to using her newfound powers on those who she believes are responsible for her current situation.
After finding out Nathan was abusive to her mother, she had regressed back to her life of petty crime, seemingly ditching her pursuit of avenging him. It also left Bowen in a very depressed state, as she takes out her frustrations to anyone she meets with her Hope Absorption, even friends alike. While she eventually snapped out of this state, the revelation still troubles Bowen and she equates abusers to be the same as Nathan, having no qualms over terrorizing and hurting them.
Eight months after her battle with Terrors, Bowen has begun to resume a more normal, grounded life, such as going to ballet, spending time with her recovering mother, but misses being a hero and targets abusers within the group she goes with her mother as a way to resume such duties of saving people.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- "I make knives of light."
- ―Dagger[src]
- Lightforce Manipulation: Dagger can channel Lightforce through her body giving her multiple abilities. However, her emotions play a key role in her abilities and having little hope, can render herself powerless.
- Light Manipulation: Dagger possesses some control over all forms of light, which occurs when she experiences heightened emotions. She caused multiple chandeliers to flicker and completely shut off, and made the taillights of a truck and a light post glow too intensely and explode. While on a run she made multiple light posts flicker and fissure.
- Light Energy Constructs: Dagger can use Lightforce to generate solid dagger-like constructs. These daggers are powerful enough to cut through solid steel – such as a safe door or an I-beam – with almost no effort, and can be conjured and dismissed at will. While in Ivan Hess' mindscape, Bowen developed the ability to maintain her dagger constructs without having to hold them, allowing her to utilise them as projectile weapons, and retained this ability upon waking. Dagger has demonstrated the ability to generate up to three daggers at a time, as well as to conjure and throw multiple sets of daggers in quick succession. Dagger can expand her daggers into a longer sword construct. Her light sword proved to be much more powerful, as it was fatal to D'Spayre in the Dark Dimension, while her regular daggers had previously shown no effect.
- Energy Projection: Dagger is able to concentrate Lightforce energy into a bright energy ball that explodes in blinding light, similar to a flashbang. She can also fire these light balls at her enemies, to detonate with concussive force.
- Hope Absorption: While viewing a person's hopes, Dagger is able to remove a hope from their mind and absorb it into herself, usually by touching the representation of the person within their hope or an object of their desire. Stealing a hope in this manner has a negative impact on the victim, as it can leave them in despair and cause them to act in ways they would not have done if that particular hope was still present; for example, once Liam Walsh's hope that he and Bowen would have a future together was removed, he subsequently betrayed and abandoned her, stealing all her money in the process. When absorbing another person's hope, Dagger experiences rushes of pleasure and euphoria.
- Hope Perception: Dagger can psychically view the hopes and desires of an individual by making skin-to-skin contact. When doing so her hand will glow with white light, even before contact occurs. These hopes are represented by images and scenarios which can range from the absolute literal to more metaphorical. When utilising this power an avatar of Bowen will appear within the hope scenario, as if she were physically present.
- Light Daggers: During her and Cloak's duel with D'Spayre, Dagger was able to combine both her light and hope abilities. She was able to create daggers of pure light, and rather than being an offensive weapon like her regular light-based ones, these daggers were able to heal. When she threw them at her mother, Mikayla Bell, and Mina Hess, it completely broke them of the despair-filled spell that Andre had them trapped under, allowing the trio to fully recover and regain the hope that had been stripped from them. Her power was also able to free Geoffrey Wilder of Morgan le Fay’s spell, when she blasted him with a light orb.
- Mental Paralysis: Dagger is capable of trapping people within mental prisons. She did this to Peter Scarborough, locking him in his own mind and leaving his body permanently in a catatonic state.[6]
- Memory Reading: When she and Cloak are touching the same person, Dagger can view their actual memories, rather than just subjective representations of their hopes. While viewing memories, avatars of Cloak and Dagger identical to their physical forms exist within these memories, with Cloak and Dagger able to interact with each other, and to a lesser extent beings and objects within the memories as well. When using this ability on Ivan Hess he was aware of Cloak and Dagger's presence within his comatose mindscape, but retained no memory of this upon waking.[13]
Abilities[]
- Combatant: While in Ivan Hess' mind, Dagger became capable of defeating multiple Terrors with her Lightforce constructs. She's since become skilled in wielding her daggers for both offensive and defensive purposes.
- Knife Mastery: She has very well experience wielding a knife as she impaled a knife to the wall in her mother’s house after accidentally cutting her hand. Then overtime as her powers to manifest hope daggers emerged Tandy has became proficiency skiiled to use them as weapons against foes or in enforced situations.
- Expert Marksman: Upon being trapped in the mindscape of Ivan Hess battling his Terrors, Bowen became skilled in throwing her light daggers in combat and is able to aim at lethal spots, such as the heart and head, demonstrating great aiming capabilities.
- Acrobat: When she was younger, Bowen practiced ballet and has since resumed her lessons.
- Expert Thief: Bowen is skilled in theft, specializing in pick-pocketing. She was able to lift Tyrone Johnson's wallet from his jacket pocket undetected before he realized it was missing. Bowen was later able to steal Adina Johnson's Roxxon card without Johnson noticing.
- Expert Investigator: Bowen is a clever and excellent investigator, as she was able to follow every lead and rumor to discover the truth behind the Roxxon Oil rig malfunction through a series of documents.
Equipment[]
- Pointe Shoes: To be added
- Hoodie: Bowen stole Johnson's hoodie after surviving the car accident caused by the Roxxon Gulf Platform. Bowen returned the hoodie to Johnson years later after his brother's cloak was damaged by the Terrors in order to help him use his powers.
Facilities[]
- Bowen Residence: To be added
- St. Theresa's Church: To be added
Prisons[]
- Viking Motel: Bowen was brought into this motel after her capture by Andre Deschaine and Lia Dewan, where she was supposed to become another of their victims of human sex trafficking, having to engage in forced sex work. Although she lost hope because of their manipulations and her failure to escape, she was eventually able to evade from the motel due to Del rebelling against Dewan and Cloak attacking the motel to save her.
