- "The universe keeps pushing us together."
"The universe keeps pulling us apart." - ―Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen
Call/Response is the fourth episode of the first season of the television series Cloak & Dagger.
Synopsis[]
Tandy and Tyrone come face-to-face as the two are able to sit down and talk. Having not been able to tell anyone else what they have been experiencing, both take the opportunity to finally confide in the one person who may truly understand what they are going through. Meanwhile, Otis reveals a secret side of himself and Greg seems to be onto something with Melissa's case against Roxxon.
Plot[]
Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson both agree to talk about what has been going on with their lives, starting with his visions he had of how he saw Bowen as a young girl then a teen running away while her Father was being tortured by the Roxxon men, and they wonder what it could all mean.
Johnson is in a rush to leave his home and takes his bike, while Bowen heads home to talk with her Mother. She asks about Roxxon and her father's case, Melissa tells her that they should ask for some help from her boyfriend Greg Pressfield, which Bowen declares everything she doesn't like about him, as Pressfield walks in with groceries.
In a Darkroom, Johnson and Evita Fusilier make out, making Fusilier shocked of this "new Tyrone". Johnson and Bowen talk about how he can he can see into people fears and she can see into people hopes; making an example of that, while helping cut up peppers with Pressfield, Bowen looks into his hopes. Pressfield hopes for a perfect happy life with Bowen and Melissa, and Bowen is shocked by what she saw. She heads down to his office the next day and offers to help him with the case. Bowen tells Johnson to get closer to his cop, he needs to come up with a narrative. So he breaks his bike lock with a pair of bolt-cutters and makes it seem like someone stole his bike.
He is able to get into the police station, but gets overwhelmed and leaves. He heads home where Otis Johnson tells him he was about to take his door off, but his bolt-cutters were taken. Johnson attempts to lie, but Otis finds them in his backpack, and tells Johnson to follow him. Johnson tells Bowen that his powers always lead him to a certain person, but in a way protects him. She tells how once she loses hope, her lightforce daggers appear like some sort of release. They tell each other that they never told anyone, not even their "partners" or parents.
Bowen wonders what would happen if they touched again like when they were out in the graveyard, they close their eyes and as they are about to touch, the same thing happens and throws them to opposite sides of the church. Otis takes Johnson to see his old gang, who greet him with a test and he passes. Johnson looks at the pictures of the old gang members and sees one of Billy Johnson, who was training to be the next 'Spy boy". Otis shows Johnson the bead work that the gang does every year, he heads into a room where he finds a cloak that Otis says belonged to his brother and Johnson offers to fix it for him.
Pressfield gets a call from his wife during dinner, which causes Melissa to leave. Afterwards Bowen talks with her mother that she was right about him and that he's not a bad man, but Melissa turns around and says she broke up with him. She heads straight to his office where she witnesses a woman shoot him in the head and burn up the papers. Johnson tells Bowen that what they both have is "survivors guilt" and Bowen asks if Tyrone feels guilty, which he says yes but she feels like she should have been the one to die. That causes an argument between them about how their lives aren't as perfect as they seem, so he tells her to just do it, though she brings up that he also has a death wish.
She heads down to the shore dock, gets up to the edge and ties a rope and chain around her ankles and wrists. She jumps into the water, sinking down until a light shines in the water and out she pops cutting the rope with her lightforce Dagger. Johnson heads back into the police station wanting to speak to Brigid O'Reilly, and Bowen heads back to Pressfield's office, opens a safe with the dagger, and grabs some files of the case.
