Agent Natalia Alianovna "Natasha" Romanoff (Russian: Наталья Альяновна "Наташа" Романов), codenamed Black Widow, is a special agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a member of the STRIKE team, alongside Captain Carter and Brock Rumlow.

Red Room Assassin[]
Growing Up in the Red Room[]

Born a daughter of Ivan Romanoff, Natasha Romanoff was taken at a young age by the Red Room and trained to be a deadly assassin. As a child in the Red Room, Romanoff was mostly raised by her adoptive father, Alexei Shostakov and adoptive mother, Melina Vostokoff. While in the third grade, Romanoff damaged her left knee in a bicycle accident.[3]
Killing Dreykov[]

As an adult, Romanoff wanted to defect from the Red Room, so she spent five days in a sewer in Hungary, where she tracked Dreykov until she successfully killed him, stabbing him in the carotid artery with a corkscrew. Now free from the Red Room, Romanoff joined S.H.I.E.L.D. as a special agent.[3]

During her time in S.H.I.E.L.D., Romanoff worked closely with Nick Fury and Clint Barton, who became the only people she trusted. This list was increased when she met Peggy Carter, who was recently found by S.H.I.E.L.D. after disappearing in the wormhole for 70 years. Romanoff and Carter developed a fast friendship, becoming best friends, as Romanoff entrusted Carter with details of her past.[2]
Battle of New York[]

When Earth fell under attack by Loki and his army of Chitauri, a super team of heroes was formed, called the Avengers, consisting of Black Widow, Captain Carter, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Thor and Wasp.

The Avengers assembled in New York City where they fought against the Chitauri army. Black Widow equipped herself with a Chitauri Staff, as she fought side by side with Captain Carter, and the two impressed each other with their fighting ability. They then jumped onto the Chitauri Chariots and flew to Stark Tower and confronted Loki. Captain Carter suggested a plan of attack, but Black Widow decided that they should just hit him a lot. After defeating Loki, the Avengers successfully stopped the invasion.[3]
Lemurian Star Mission[]

While Romanoff was jogging in Washington, D.C., Captain Carter arrived to pick her up, informing Romanoff that they had a mission.[3] The two, accompanied by the STRIKE team were tasked with retaking the Lemurian Star which was hijacked by Georges Batroc. After a briefing with Brock Rumlow and other STRIKE agents, Romanoff chatted with Carter about Saturday night plans and suggested she ask Bernard out but Carter quickly refused the idea. Romanoff figured out that Carter still could not forget Steve Rogers, although Carter did not confirm nor deny it and jumped out of the Quinjet without a parachute.
Romanoff is confused about Captain Carter
While Carter engaged in a battle with Batroc and other pirates on the deck, Romanoff surveyed the ship to figure out what Bartoc and his men were after.[2] Eventually, Romanoff discovered S.H.I.E.L.D.'s cargo on the Lemurian Star being the HYDRA Stomper Armor: Mark II and to her great surprise, there was apparently a person inside the armor. Romanoff then rushed to Carter to assist her in the battle, as Batroc gained an upper hand, so Romanoff used the Black Widow's Bite to electrocute him. Carter suddenly embraced Romanoff, telling her how happy she was to see her which confused Romanoff since she was unaware of what Carter went through.

Romanoff then informed Carter that she found what the pirates were after and walked her to the cargo deck, warning her that it might shock her. Although Carter dismissed it, saying it would not be the strangest thing she saw that day, Romanoff showed her the HYDRA Stomper Armor, discovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. Romanoff then told Carter that there was a person inside the armor, much to Carter's great delight, since it meant that Steve Rogers was still alive.[2] However, the armor activated and attacked them, so Romanoff and Carter ran as they fell under heavy fire, and were able to escape by diving into the ocean.[3]
Attack on the Triskelion[]

Returning to the Triskelion, Romanoff listened as Captain Carter questioned Nick Fury about Steve Rogers's survival. Romanoff interjected that the Red Room could be controlling Rogers, causing Carter to realize that Romanoff also knew of his survival. Carter wanted to find Rogers, but Romanoff and Fury suggested she stood down.
Romanoff takes aim at the HYDRA Stomper
The HYDRA Stomper attempted to assassinate Bucky Barnes, so as Carter went to save him, Romanoff was ordered by Fury to use lethal force against the HYDRA Stomper. Romanoff piloted a Quinjet and prepared to use fire upon the HYDRA Stomper, only to be blocked by Barnes. When Carter fought the HYDRA Stomper in the sky and knocked him out, Romanoff flew the Quinjet below them, allowing Carter to guide the HYDRA Stomper inside before they hit the ground.[3]

Romanoff brought Captain Carter to a safe house in St. Kilda, as S.H.I.E.L.D. did not know of its existence. Romanoff analyzed the HYDRA Stomper, learning that it was the reason Steve Rogers still looked young, but it was also keeping him alive and could not be removed.

Romanoff and Carter decided to have a drink, discussing how each time the HYDRA Stomper was activated it lowered Rogers' chances of survival. Romanoff suggested contacting Tony Stark or Bruce Banner, but Carter was against it, not wanting to risk Rogers being locked away. She instead decided they'd track down the Red Room, but Romanoff did not know their location. However, Rogers awoke and told them he could take them.[3]
Return to the Red Room[]

Steve Rogers led Romanoff and Captain Carter to a Sokovian military base, where they would wait for the Red Room to arrive. While they waited, Romanoff decided to give Carter and Rogers time alone. When the mannequins began attacking, Romanoff helped Carter and Rogers destroy them, but they were quickly defeated.
Romanoff and Carter prepare to fight
Once the mannequins stood down, Romanoff and Carter looked up and saw the Red Room Academy. They were then greeted by Melina Vostokoff and the Black Widows, who activated the HYDRA Stomper and revealed that her plan to trap Carter had worked. Vostokoff offered them a chance to surrender, but Romanoff and Carter chose to fight. The HYDRA Stomper attacked Carter and the Widows opened fire at Romanoff, forcing her to take cover.
Romanoff defeats Melina Vostokoff
Romanoff was able to get away from them when Carter knocked over the water tower. Romanoff recovered inside one of the houses, but was soon found by the Widows. They entered and began to fight Romanoff, who managed to hold her own, but soon was overwhelmed and thrown outside. Romanoff was able to knock them out using the Bite. Vostokoff then fought Romanoff and was able to beat her, choking her out. However, seeing HYDRA Stomper flying towards the Academy, Romanoff grappled Vostokoff onto him, killing her in the destruction.[3]
Peggy Carter's Disappearance[]

Returning to Avengers Tower, Romanoff found Peggy Carter about to leave to find Steve Rogers. Knowing she would not stop until she found him, Romanoff decided to join Carter in her search. However, Carter was suddenly a red portal opened up beneath Carter and she fell through it. Romanoff called out to Carter, not knowing where she went.[3]

Romanoff was a perceptive person, who was able to figure out that Peggy Carter was not yet over Steve Rogers. She was able to keep the tone of missions light and tease Carter about her feelings. However, she understood how much Rogers meant to Carter and made sure to tell her about the HYDRA Stomper Armor: Mark II being found on Lemurian Star.
