History

Star-Lord when he was younger
Sometime before the Red Skull overthrew the United States of America, Star-Lord stepped up to be the Emperor of the Spartax Empire, while marrying L'ssa who bore him two children, Meredith and Jason. Due to his duties he could not assist the Guardians on an unspecified mission that resulted in Groot's death, leaving his relationship with the others strained.
He continued being the emperor for many years after the uprising and remained oblivious to the events on Earth, until the Universal Church of Truth attacked his planet, killing his family in the process.[2] Years later, Quill received a dying message from the Guardians that he was the only hope left to stop the Church and that he needed to go Earth and retrieved the Ultimate Nullifier. Quill was so devastated by the Guardians' deaths that he created hallucinations of them in order to cope.[3]
While traveling to Earth with the hallucinations of the Guardians as companions, Quill investigate a distress call in the Sol System and search for an object that could stop the Universal Church of Truth, and after finding the Peak overrun with Brood, his ship the Milano was attacked by an attack satellite and ultimately crash-landed in the Badlands of Amerika.[2]
While being escorted through the Badlands by a scavenger named Marco, Star-Lord learned that Doctor Doom ruled Amerika and that Earth's heroes had fell years ago. Later, he helped a town fight off the Wrecking Crew who were demanding tribute for Doom[4] and the Ghost Riders. The Ghost Riders later returned en masse and captured Star-Lord who sold them to Taskmaster be used as gladiatorial entertainment by pitting them against a controlled Fin Fang Foom.[1]
With help from Spider-Woman, Star-Lord freed Foom from Taskmaster's control and was able to escape.[5] After reaching the town of Owlsley Nest, Wyoming, Star-Lord defeated the Madrox Gang by sacrificing one of his Element Guns.[6] After an encounter with Pulsar, a member of the Universal Church of Truth along with the Imperial Guard, Pulsar sacrificed himself to signal to the Church that Earth was now vulnerable. Pulsar's signal also alerted the Imperial Guard to his location.[7]
After arriving at the Baxter Building, Star-Lord failed to find the Ultimate Nullifier but uncovered H.E.R.B.I.E. who aided them in escaping a horde of Moloids. After escaping the Moloids, Quill ran into the Imperial Guard and realized that the Guardians that he was traveling with were hallucinations.[8] Quill escaped into the Baxter Building and fought the Imperial Guard using a leftover Hulkbuster Armor and killed most of them. During the fight, a time machine in the basement was damaged, causing it to explode and take out the remaining Imperial Guardsmen. Quill was able to escape but lost consciousness. He was eventually found by rebels being led by Viv Vision.[9]
With the Baxter Building gone, Star-Lord thought all hope was lost until Viv suggested that he entered the rip in space-time left by the time machine's explosion and travel back in time to retrieve the Ultimate Nullifier in the past. Star-Lord agreed, and he and H.E.R.B.I.E. successfully traveled through time. However, Fantastic Four members Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman refused to hand over the Ultimate Nullifier. Then Kang the Conqueror and banished the Fantastic Four into the timestream. After briefly battling Star-Lord, Kang left but not before destroying H.E.R.B.I.E., stranding Star-Lord in the past.[10]
Using the Rosebud III, Star-Lord traveled to Mister Fantastic's and Invisible Woman's location in the timestream but discovered that they had long died of old age. However, they knew Star-Lord would eventually appear in Rosebud III and left him the Ultimate Nullifier and the coordinates to get him back to his own time period. As he traveled through the timestream, Star-Lord encountered Gladiator and managed to kill him using the Ultimate Nullifier. When Star-Lord finally did return to his time period, he discovered that Doom and his forces that had defeated Viv and her forces. Doom then destroyed the Ultimate Nullifier, mistakenly believing that Star-Lord was going to use it against him.[11]
Star-Lord was about to be executed when Viv and her forces to help just as the Church's god Galactus had arrived to consume Earth. Using a sliver of the Time Stone that was used to run Rosebud III, Star-Lord fired it from Two-Gun Kid's revolver and struck Galactus in the head, effectively lobotomizing him. Without Galactus' power to maintain the mind control over most of their forces, the Church were forced to retreat.[12]
While waiting for the Milano to be repaired, Star-Lord paid a visit to the ruins of the X-Mansion to pay his respects to the fallen X-Men, including former girlfriend Shadowcat. Star-Lord was then tormented by visions of the X-Men and non-mutant heroes, which were generated by the Shadow King. Long trapped within Cerebro, the Shadow King hoped to escape and use Star-Lord as his host. Star-Lord was able to overcome the Shadow King's mental attacks and destroyed Cerebro's control panel, causing the Shadow King to vanish. Once the Milano was repaired, Star-Lord renamed it the Pryde[13] and left Earth to reform the Guardians of the Galaxy to finally put an end to the Universal Church.[12]Paraphernalia
