History

When the New York branch of the Thieves Guild offended their patron goddess Candra, they became bereft of her patronage. The New York guild was disgraced and excommunicated by the global guilds loyal to the Benefactress and were labeled as pariahs. Not only that, but the inner circle of the New York guild were unable to receive the Elixir of Life to enjoy eternal life. The blame was placed on the leading family of the guild, the Drakes. However one member of the Drake family, Castillo Drake, sought out others to bargain immortality from. Drake's mentor, Black Fox disagreed with his former protégé's path as it was too dangerous. The two got in an argument which ended with Black Fox killing Castillo. Despite his death, Castillo's work was continued by his daughter Odessa Drake. A thief herself, she too sought out the secrets he wished to uncover.[1]

Gilded Saint (Earth-616) from Black Cat Vol 1 7 001

Odessa Drake makes a deal with the Gilded Saint

Using paintings of Orlando she decoded a place that she initially planned to hide her loot, but instead came into contact with a denizen of that strange dimension called the Gilded Saint. Odessa made a deal with the alien god, giving it a ten percent tribute of anything stolen in New York City. In return it would grant the inner circle of the New York branch immortality.

The god was sought by Black Fox to save himself from an illness that would kill him in a matter of months. Having been turned away by immortals like Dracula and Yi Yang; and other gods and immortals like Zheng Zu dead, Black Fox believed that the Gilded Saint was the only one who could save him. With the aid of Black Cat and her crew, the two thieves broke into the secret cemeteries of the New York Thieves Guild. Though Black Fox tricked her into thinking it was just another heist, he later revealed his true intentions at the cemetery. The veteran thief then used a device to call upon the dimensional being to the cemeteries. It appeared, though angered it was rudely called by an intruder. Black Fox negotiated a bargain with the god wishing for it to grant immortality to not just him but Black Cat. The Gilded Saint stated that it had already made a deal for immortality with Odessa Drake and could not break it. As a counter offer, Black Fox offered a more valuable deal: the deed to Manhattan.[2]

Black Cat, not willing to make the deal, tried to take back the deed, but it was too late as the Gilded Saint accepted the terms and granted Black Fox and his accomplice eternal life in exchange for the island of Manhattan. The god then sealed the contract and vanished, reinvigorating Black Fox back to his youth as a result. As for Manhattan, gold vines began to erupt everywhere as the god planned to bring the entire island into its vaults.[3]

Finding the idea of sacrificing millions for her immortality to be monstrous Black Cat wanting to make things right, sought out her enemy Odessa Drake to return to the Vaults. The thief managed to locate the deed to Manhattan but was found by the Gilded Saint. It asked why the human was there in its domain, wondering perhaps she wanted to be part of its collection. Black Cat asked that the god rescind herself from the deal that Black Fox made without her consent. Surprised by this the god complied as the deal was no loss. When Black Cat asked to be given a way out, the god informed her it was impossible, however Black Cat offered it information. In that Black Fox intended to renege on their deal and that the deed to Manhattan would be invalidated. The god was doubtful but was willing to send Black Cat back as payment for the information. Though if it proved to be false the Gilded Saint would be allowed to claim her.

In actuality Black Cat planted a explosive on the deed and after being sent back to Earth the deed exploded. When the deed was destroyed the Gilded Saint believed that Black Fox was to blame and came for the thief, dragging him back to its realm to make him a part of its collection.[4]
