History

Origins

On display in the menagerie

Cosmo is an excitable but stubborn Labrador breed dog born in the Soviet Union on Earth who was sent into outer space in 1966 as part of their space program. She was lost in the stars and while out there somehow developed telekinesis. She was eventually found by the Collector and put on display in his menagerie of unique creatures and objects in the mining colony of Knowhere.

Joining the Guardians

In 2014, Cosmo witnessed a band of mercenaries later known as the Guardians of the Galaxy attempt to sell the Collector the destructive cosmic artifact known as the Power Stone, but was forced to flee her home as the Collector's assistant attempted to harness its power and accidentally destroyed the building. She returned to the wreckage later to cheer the Collector up, and presumably stayed with him for the next decade, eventually attaining a collar that allowed her to communicate by turning her thoughts into audio.

Cosmo and Rocket

Around 2025, the Guardians bought out Knowhere from the Collector and were introduced to Cosmo proper, bringing her on as a reserve member of the team. In exchange for treats, she utilized her telekinetic abilities to clean up and repair Knowhere after the damage it sustained in a heavy attack from Thanos in 2018, and became rather close with the team's cynical and snarky weapons expert, Rocket, and their bashful reserve member, Kraglin.

Battling the High Evolutionary

Sometime after Cosmo joined the Guardians, Knowhere was attacked by the evolved Sovereign Adam, who sought to apprehend Rocket and take him back to his creator, the High Evolutionary. The Guardians fought Adam off and he fled, but not before he mortally wounded Rocket in the struggle. The Guardians discovered they were unable to operate on him due to a kill switch implanted on his heart, and went to track down the High Evolutionary to get the passkey to disarm it, leaving Kraglin and Cosmo to look after Knowhere while they were gone.

Personality

Cosmo is excitable and playful and cares deeply about her friends. She will do whatever they ask while also playfully teasing them. She is easily offended and very stubborn, refusing to do tasks unless given treats and getting very upset when insulted. In one instance when Kraglin called her a bad dog, she complained for days and begged repeatedly for him to take it back, but once he did, instantly reverted back to playing around with him.

Notes

• Maria Bakalova voices Cosmo in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Fred the Dog portrayed Cosmo in Guardians of the Galaxy and a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, while Slate served as her movement reference in Holiday Special and Vol. 3.
• James Gunn opted on making Cosmo a female in the MCU as an homage to Laika, the Soviet dog that was sent into space aboard the Sputnik 2 to test whether it was possible for humans to survive the launch and conditions of outer space.
