Carcharoth, the mighty Wolf
- Birth of Urwen, second child of Húrin and Morwen.
- Beren and Lúthien enter Angband and steal a Silmaril from Morgoth's Iron Crown but are waylaid by the great wolf Carcharoth who bites off Beren's hand along with the Silmaril, but Thorondor and the Eagles rescue them and return them to Doriath. Carcharoth is driven mad by the Silmaril and runs to Doriath.
- King Thingol takes some companions, including Beren, Beleg, Huan, and goes on a hunt for Carcharoth.
- Huan the Hound fights Carcharoth to the death and both die.
- Beren is killed in the struggle.
