- Beren sets out from Doriath on a quest to retrieve a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown to win Lúthien's hand, the Quest for the Silmaril.
- Finrod of Nargothrond and some others agree to accompany him.

- The capture of Finrod, Beren, and ten other loyal companions by Sauron.
- Finrod is killed by a werewolf and the other companions (including Edrahil) are also slain in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the "Isle of werewolves", but Beren is saved by his love, Lúthien, and a friend, Huan, who engages Sauron in combat and defeats him, forcing him to surrender and fleeing in vampire form to Taur-nu-Fuin.
- Orodreth becomes the second King of Nargothrond and expels Celegorm and Curufin, who then journey to Himring.
