The Union of Maedhros was an attempt by Maedhros, son of Fëanor, to unite Elves, Dwarves, and Men against Morgoth in the year FA 472.
History[]
Some time after the disastrous defeat of the Elves and Edain during Dagor Bragollach, a mortal man and an elven princess, Beren and Lúthien, managed to sneak into Angband and take a Silmaril from Morgoth's Iron Crown. The tale of the two lovers restored hope in the heart of Maedhros that Morgoth was not invincible, and he sought to unite all the foes of Morgoth in a force capable of taking the fight the Angband. However, the Oath of Fëanor and numerous other evils wrought by Maedhros's brothers stymied his plans. King Thingol of Doriath sent no aid to the alliance due to threats made to his kingdom by Curufin, and from Nargothrond there came only a single company, for Curufin and Celegorm had committed deeds that had indirectly led to the death of Nargothrond's king, Finrod. Nevertheless, Maedhros was successful in uniting the vast majority of the Elves, Men, and Dwarves of Beleriand against Morgoth, and in preparation for an assault on Angband, the Union first rid Dorthonion of Orcs. However, this alerted Morgoth to the existence of the Union, and he took counsel against it.
Maedhros planned to divide the Union's forces between himself and Fingon. He would march openly against Angband with the larger of the two hosts while Fingon's armies hid in the forests around the Ered Wethrin. His hope was to draw out Morgoth's forces and crush them between his and Fingon's armies, then seal the doors of Angband and hopefully drive Morgoth underground forever. Learning of Maedhros's plans through his spies, Morgoth divided his own forces into two hosts, and sent the larger of the two to attack Maedhros. Glaurung, his many fire breathing brood, and a gigantic force of Orcs combined with the Men of the treacherous Ulfang the Black to rout the host of Maedhros, though Ulfang and his men died for their betrayal. However, this prevented Maedhros's army from combining with Fingon's, and Fingon's own army was ultimately destroyed during Nírnaeth Arnoediad. Fingon and Huor were slain during the battle, and Húrin was captured. The Union was thus ended and with it, the power of the people of Middle-earth to resist Morgoth.[1]
