The Pinnath Gelin, or Green Hills, was a fertile, hilled country in western Gondor between the western White Mountains and Anfalas.[1]
It was sparsely populated.
Description[]
The climate likely hovered between moderate and extreme, with mild winters and hot, dry summers. Its terrain consisted of hilly scattered woodlands.[2][3]
History[]
At the time of the War of the Ring, Hirluin the Fair was the lord of the region. As Pinnath Gelin was a loyal province of Gondor, Hirluin came with some 300 well-armed men marched to the aid of Minas Tirith, fighting in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Hirluin was killed by Orcs during the ensuing battle.[4]
Etymology[]
Pinnath Gelin is Sindarin for 'green slopes'[5] or 'green hills', from Pinnath, which means 'ridges', and calen -> gelin, meaning 'green'.
