Anfalas,[1] or An-falas,[2] was a southwestern coastal region in the Outlands of Gondor.
Anfalas was known in Westron as Langstrand[1] or simply the Strand, and lay between the rivers Lefnui and Morthond, south of the Pinnath Gelin, with a wide stretch of beaches along the Belegaer ocean.
Description[]
The climate of the Anfalas featured mild winters and hot, dry summers.[3] The terrain consisted of scattered woodlands[4] on undulating lowlands.[5] It was not densely populated and had mostly little villages, having no known cities due to being far from central Gondor.
History[]
During the War of the Ring, the people of the Anfalas were led by Lord Golasgil, one of the Captains of the Outlands. He brought with him a well-equipped household retinue, but mostly commanded a long line of scantily equipped hunters, herders and villagers to the defense of Minas Tirith. Anfalas was harassed at the coasts by the Corsairs of Umbar while Golasgil was away.
Etymology[]
An-falas is a name in Sindarin meaning "Langstrand" or "long beach"[2]. It contains the words an(d) ("long, far")[6] and falas ("beach, strand; shore;[2] surf, wave-beaten shore;[7] surfline, seashore")[8].[9]
In adaptations[]
In The Lord of the Rings trilogy of films[]
In The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Anfalas was spelled as Änfäläs (¨ are actually ؞, but unicode has no roman characters with that symbol)[10] on its maps of Middle-earth.
