The Awakening of Men was the creation of mankind by Eru Ilúvatar.
History[]
Men, created by Eru Ilúvatar, awoke in the easterly land of Hildórien which was a land southeast of Cuiviénen,[1] at the first rising of the first Sun, at the time when the Elves of the Ñoldor were returning from Valinor to Middle-earth.[2] Men were befriended by the Dark Elves, of which there were few, but were also approached by Morgoth. The Men were divided into many different groups. Two were seen in the First Age: the Edain and the Easterlings, also known as the Swarthy Men.[3]
When the Elves had awakened, Middle-earth was still lit only by stars, and Elves had no fear of night, wherefore Oromë called them the People of the Stars or Eldar.[4] However, Men awoke when the Sun first arose in the heavens, and the Elves therefore called them Children of the Sun, and "Night-fearers".[3]
By some accounts, Melkor's vassal, Sauron, came among the first Men during or after the captivity of Melkor and corrupted them.[5][6]
According to some legends of the Edain, it was Melkor himself who found Men while they were still in Hildórien, seeking their allegiance, and converted them away from Eru, convincing them that they had been made mortal in divine punishment. However, mortality was in fact a Gift of Ilúvatar to Men, not a punishment. To escape the evil of Morgoth and his followers, the Atanatári were the first to flee Hildórien, travelling west and eventually coming to Beleriand.[3]
