It's a Wonderful Life

This review may contain spoilers.

As my rating system changed, many films were affected. Some would stay and some left their current position, and It’s a Wonderful Life is one of those moved films but only for the sake of saving. Today, I watched it once more with my older brother who has never seen a Capra before. We both enjoyed it and my love for the holiday classic was restored, which is infrequent especially for a person like me. Viewing experiences go difficult after not seeing it for probably three or four months, at least. The magic of the film never left me at all.

It’s a Wonderful Life is a spellbinding, and I’m coming out and saying it: there’s really not much to talk about in this film frankly because the family values portrayed is just some of the most innocent I have witnessed, themes are fleshed out in the clearest, simplest way possible, sets and performances are spectacular, and the message is gold. From a technical standpoint, it excels in what it’s trying to be.

The film is humble in its exploration of ambitions, capitalism and discontent of a promising young man about to become a father yet his dreams slowly grow into hurdles, so he decides on Christmas night that he will take his own life. In the third act, the existentialist horror is put forward. Up to the joyous ending, the tonal shift made the enormous difference.

This is open, so accessible for children and adults. It grows. It starts at a time of high spirits, lands with a hard crash in the middle as fatherhood follows our main character around, and picks itself back up on a special night of attainment. What appears to be stretched or drawn-out distributes a fine share of appropriateness. A floor splitting open as a couple dance Modern Times-esque without the roller skates is uproarious meanwhile a man letting his emotions get the best of him and putting all of its weight on his own family is harrowing.

Stewart’s George Bailey has got that appealing physicality. He’s kind of a breed of a cartoon television show. He is like that one friend who’s goofing off is just as impressive when he loses his temper. Cary Grant was supposed to take his place though. He’d make a perfect Bond, but with a Bailey, nay.

By coloring, I think the natural beauty of the quality of the film is ruined because it is like telling the viewer that the physical aspect of the project is requisite to achieve leaving a better impression of the film. No volume of color can pass the filmmaking done. Coloring black and white films is a mistake.

It’s a Wonderful Life will never be a film watchable depending on a given mood. You see a calming, feel-good movie when the day is gloomy, a romance when love is in the air, horror if you want to challenge yourself psychologically or during Halloween. Capra’s film captured a personal life, peaking at the end, which can also be seen as a new beginning. Merry Christmas everybody!
