    Watching this at a video store slaps. 
    Jesse Merlin still slaps, and is the funniest part of the movie. 

    Also in the dozen or so times I’ve watched this only now did i notice 
    -the characters color schemes match their player pieces when they’re playing the game
    -the Barbara Crampton mad scientist pinup photo on the wall of the father’s office 
    -the very funny Blood Rage parody VHS 

    Beyond the Gates is a gift.

    Absolutely. Yes. 110%.

    Wrapped me up in its beauty, and overtook me. This is a gorgeous, incredibly well done adaptation that feels so necessary, too good to be true. 

    Nicholas Hoult has the best face for this type of expressive horror acting. Willem Dafoe is top tier. 

    A few things I was not 100% on, but overall a comfy escape into the darkness.

    A fun movie to open up Beyond Fest this year! Wish the script was more “show, don’t tell”, but it did give us excellent Alfre Woodard one-liners. Mark is a precious child and I wish I was as brave as him when I was a wannabe kid monster hunter. 

    Also cheering for Alex Ward as Barlow! 👏🏼
