Another strong contender for funniest movie of all time. Waters has improved so much as a filmmaker from Maniacs to here (haven't seen Pink Flamingos in between but I'm sure you can see more evolution there), you can tell he's reveling in that enormous $25,000 budget.
Divine is more powerful than ever here. I genuinely didn't even question her playing a teenager as a start, there was so much confidence in that performance it was like "oh yeah, of course,…

Unbelievable opening half ruined by a silly twist and a turn I just can’t get behind. Monroe is incredible and so is Underwood but I just cannot gel with Cage once he starts really getting screen time. He’s very effective in short bursts and he does look crazy but it just totally took me out of it in a way the movie never really recovers from.
Looks amazing from start to finish though, as expected of Oz Perkins. Just sadly…

I was really in for the first half or so, but it went from everyone being stupid and it being funny to everyone being stupid and it being annoying. Still very pretty looking and super well edited, some insane cuts in this. Plus everyone in it is really good, especially Cage of course.

First of all, EWWWWW!!!!
Second of all, I know people are really pulling for this to get some Oscar noms but holy shit, there is not a single chance a movie this batshit is sniffing anything, even a BTL nom.
That said, this movie does kinda rule insanely hard. I was super cautious about the runtime but you don't feel it at all, it moves fast and packs a lot of shit into it.
Moore is so good, Quaid is…

A testament to Ryan Gosling's on-screen power because I don't know if there's anyone else who could pull this off. Far and away the strongest part of the movie, he almost makes some of the real bad lines work - "sexy bacon" in 2024 isn't the go.
No one is particularly bad here though. Winston Duke is probably my second favorite performance, he's mostly just duding up with Gosling but they have good chemistry. Blunt is there, she's totally serviceable…

This is, how do you say, cuckoo bananas shit. Are all John Waters movies like this? Is any movie like this? Manages to not only avoid being bottom of the barrel nonsense but soars well above that thanks a good deal to Divine being one of the all time great screen presences. She is so fucking good, you literally can’t look away when she’s on screen because you never know what insane thing she’s gonna do or say next.
I…

Very well made debut for Kendrick, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that she likes Zodiac and David Fincher because this movies owes a lot to his films. But y'know, it's alright, cause I love both of those things too.
Looks great, a lot of really fun shots in this (I keep thinking of the door closing on Cheryl, who perfectly fits into the small window, mwah). Loved the lighting in the "date" scene, really uncomfy.
Kendrick…

It's just so hard to believe that sometimes genius of this magnitude can go unappreciated at the time. How do you watch the last fifteen or twenty minutes of this movie and see anything but some of the great visuals and audio ever put to film. The murder of Laura Palmer could be the single most powerful, most affecting scene in film history. Multiple points where I start to well up a bit: the angel appearing when the sound drops out and Laura's smile at the end being the big ones.
This is a perfect movie, it's Lynch's best, it's one of the best ever.

The Joker doesn’t even pull a very long gun out of his pants anymore, he just talks about society.
This is the movies baby. The easiest way to feel cynical about the last fifteen years of comic book movies is by watching a movie like this or Raimi’s Spider-Man. What’s the last one of these that felt like an author’s pure vision that wasn’t either about Batman or directed by Raimi? Probably a Gunn one actually lol.
We love our…

Obviously an emotional masterpiece but noticed on this watch how flawless the film is technically too. It looks so good it’s insane, love the lighting so much.
