Schagunski’s review published on Letterboxd:
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is how a comic book coming to live looks like. It is bursting with creativity and stunning visuals but it also tells an emotionally resonant story.
The unique visual style is standing out. It blends classical elements of comic books with modern CGI and even some hand-drawn elements thrown in there. That creates a highly dynamic, interesting and popping visual experience. The action sequences make full use of all of these aspects and are very exciting and cool. The use of comic panels and speech bubbles make this truly feel like a comic book come to life. The love for the characters and comic books in general comes across perfectly.
The characters and their voice performances are great. Miles Morales’ arc of self discovery is interesting and his relationship with his father and uncle adds some real emotional weight. Peter B. Parker is a lot of fun and Jake Johnson performs the hell of him. Him struggling with his failures and finding redemption in mentoring Miles is nuanced and adds depth. Nicolas Cage and John Mulaney make their quirky characters come to live with performances that bring a lot of humor to the mix.
The story works on multiple levels. On the one hand, it is accessible to audiences that are new to the world of Spider-Man. On the other hand, it is also deeply rewarding for fans with plenty of callbacks and Easter eggs. What I love is the deeper message of anyone can wear a mask and be a hero. You could be a young kid or a small pig, it doesn’t matter. It isn’t the mask or persona that makes the hero but the person wielding it.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a highly creative comic book movie that offers not only fun animation but focus on characters and an emotional story.
