Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

He's heavy for half a guy.

I know there are some people start "Spooky Season" at the beginning of September, and I say good for them, that's a more than respectable thing, but I suppose I'm still old-fashioned where I'll wait until October to get into the horror binge mindset. Well, it's finally time. Watched this with my mom, who's been trying for awhile now to get me to see it. Perhaps aided by being able to watch it with her, this was fun! Laughed a good few times throughout it, has a good amount of entertaining "cause and effect" storytelling with its comedy, and I was at times even a little surprised with the sturdy heart this has. I enjoyed that this is a horror film that lands on a neat concept based on the concept that most bad things in the world result from a lack of communication. It's then within the meta of the film even more fun to see that horror stories themselves are built around communication not working even if you try to take the time to make it a factor. (I of course was really into one of the main characters being an aspiring therapist who at one point tries to initiate group therapy with Dale and the psychotic preppy college kid.) I know he's been getting that sweet sweet Disney money because he's who they always get whenever they need a voice for an animal sidekick, so I'm sure he's totally fine, but it is a little bit of a shame that we don't see Alan Tudyk much in live-action anymore. The guy's got range! He's a perfect fit for the tone of the picture, and my favorite aspect of the film might even be the friendship his Tucker and Tyler Labine's Dale have together. It was cute! (Shout-out to the film at one point taking a pause for Tucker to offer Dale earnest advice about how to love himself more, and it totally works.) Perhaps sometimes kneecapped a little by rickety pacing and certain moments being more "humorous" than "laugh-out-loud funny," I still had a good time all around. Hard to not have fun during a comedy of errors.
