As a college graduate who lives among hillbillies, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil was right up my alley. I’m yet to explore the horror-comedy genre combo much beyond Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead. I love the two genres separately, but they always felt like a strange mashup to me. I feel like the humor dampens the horror elements, thus turning the films into comedies with a hint of horror. Regardless, I’m yet to be disappointed by horror-comedies, and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is no exception.
“These kids are coming out here, and killing themselves all over the woods.”
That line got me, and I rarely laugh when watching movies. I’m still laughing at the line as I’m writing this review. It’s the delivery from Tucker that really sold it for me. Some of the jokes towards the end of the film became overly stupid, but most of the film had me grinning nonstop.
I loved Dale and Tucker’s dynamic in the film. It enhanced not only the humor, but also the sense of genuineness that permeates throughout the film. It’s mostly a dumb movie, but the beautiful friendship between the two dimwits really leads to some touching moments. The relationship between Dale and Allie was also heartwarming to watch blossom, even if it was a bit unconvincing. The whole “don’t judge a book by its cover” thing has been done a million times before, but it’s always refreshing to see, especially when it’s this well-executed and surrounded by such a fun film. I would definitely recommend this movie to all the lovers of silly comedies, not just the hillbillies and college graduates!
