Bill Duke’s camera and I share many affinities, chief among them – our desire to gaze (and linger) lovingly at Laurence Fishburne’s gorgeous, chiseled face for longer than needed.
An absolutely irresistible neo noir crime thriller, chocked with more than enough swagger, vulnerability, existential pondering and everything in-between. Damning indictments of racist and corrupt establishments rarely look this sumptuous.

• Leigh’s direction and writing throughout is tremendous. The long scene with Brian the security guard is probably the best showcase of this, even if I wasn’t wholly interested in the content of their conversation (in context, I found it pivotal to their characterisations). That final scene too! Masterful. Glorious.
• Naked still remains a masterclass in the observation of (very) complicated individuals and the minutiae of their daily lives.…
