For the 30th anniversary of one of my all-time favorite films Exotica, I had the pleasure of speaking with director Atom Egoyan about collective grief, rituals that harm and heal, notes that would have ruined the movie, and the struggle to remain a distinctive voice.

Read it on Letterboxd Journal here.

I need a new Steven Soderbergh + David Koepp movie every single year. There’s a lot of bad in this world, but getting two collaborations from them in the span of two months... that’s the universe trying to reset the balance. Black Bag sits firmly in between Kimi and Presence for me in the Koepperbergh trilogy, but it’s really just one banger after another. This is Agatha Christie meets John le Carré meets James Bond meets Who’s Afraid of Virginia…

What a breath of fresh air! Annapurna Sriram coming out of the gate with a fully formed vision as a filmmaker. Super eager to see what she puts together next, but this isn’t one of those “Debut film shows potential, the second one could be great!” situations. Fucktoys is a lightning rod on its own terms, like Gregg Araki making a Mad Max movie. Breathtaking 16mm photography, a trust in the audience to not need its apocalyptic decaying Trashtown universe…

Very solid Die Hard on a [blank] movie, which constantly zigs left when I thought it would go right. Makes a lot of decisions that I frankly didn’t think a movie like this would have the stones to make, which excitingly keeps you on your toes and raises the stakes. On a limited budget for an action movie attempting to achieve scale, Martin Campbell demonstrates his proficiency, and this benefits tremendously from a very charismatic Daisy Ridley in the leading…

Listen, I don’t disagree with anything this movie is saying about the commodification of women’s bodies and how that intersects with ageism (both internalized and externalized) and the nature of fame in the industry. But I think it’s got a Ruben Östlund level shallowness, lack of curiosity and insistence on punishing its audience with the same tepid observations slammed in your face like concrete over and over again into oblivion.

This is somehow 2 hours and 20 minutes of movie…

    Alright, listen. This movie....

I’ll say for the first half I was like, okay whatever this is fine. Sure, it’s all artifice with no depth or dimension to it. There’s no attempt at characterization beyond “woa how evil!” or “aw damn they’re so haunted.” Who are these people? What do they care about? What do they feel? Doesn’t matter because “oooo creepy and dark.” It’s just generic procedural hokum, moving through the motions without any momentum or spark of creativity.…
