Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Well, Mr. Juice has just come back. How about I return to actively participating on here now?

Sadly, my suggestion for Dick Cavett to make a brief appearance in here wasn't granted. The movie certainly went for killing off Charles Deetz though. All the better for it. Honestly, I'm getting giggles from remembering the OTT way this movie uses that character. Whose idea of that grave marker was it?

✈️🌊🦈🪦
I found plenty of pleasures throughout Beetlejuice² that they added up to a decent time. However, the wickedly macabre and refreshingly tactile world by Mr. Timothy Burton is unevenly supported by, shall we say, a structurally unsound screenplay. No hard feelings to Mr. Theroux, but I wouldn't mind excising his whatever boyfriend/manager role here to get more time with the other new characters. Monica Bellucci's role unfortunately doesn't amount to much relevance, but I wouldn't want to live in an alternate universe that doesn't have her introductory scene which has "Tragedy" playing in the back.

🔫😎🧠☕
The movie could've been more creative (One example of a missed opportunity here is do much more with the opening credits), and it seems to take almost a full hour for the story to get past the set-up phase. That happens once a certain development occurs (I knew something was up, but I was still surprised by it.) The climax is basically a combo of two notable set-pieces from the first film, but its song choice and zaniness are enough to delight me even without quite reaching its euphoric potential. I enjoyed that, the wicked backstory bit (inspired by Mario Bava movies? His work gets brought up later), and the Chucky-modeled baby. The 1988 predecessor is its own unique case of cinematic lightning in a bottle, but some critiques that are thrown at the sequel's writing -- Ill-defined rules, throwaway lines of anything explanatory, etc. -- can be applied to the earlier one too. For better or worse, this new movie is a true Betelgeuse flick.

👻🫀
My current rating for this legacyquel could drop upon a future rewatch just as my opinion for The Dial of Destiny dipped, but I'll give three stars and a heart for now just for it leaving me smiling like an idiot by the conclusion.
