This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Looks like I previously logged this on Letterboxd seven times dating back to its original release in 2015. So this is my eighth viewing, and the first since seeing “Furiosa.” By now it makes sense that I know the movie really well, but something very unexpected happened this time.

When Furiosa finally finds the Vuvalini, that moment when they’re reunited, I kinda burst into tears. Out of nowhere, I was overcome with the emotional weight of returning to one’s people…

I finally got to show this to my fourteen-year old daughter, who tends not to gravitate towards gritty, violent fare, so she hesitated. She ultimately gave it a thumbs up, but the occasion made me realize that this movie is now nine years old. This movie is structurally flawless and technically astounding, but it's also somehow emotionally gripping. The unrelenting journey at the heart of the narrative pulls you along with tremendous ferocity but also deftly drops just the right number of choice, highly succinct character beats to orient you and win you over to the protagonists before you even realize it. The moment when Max and Furiosa's agendas finally dovetail and they become allies is all done with the actors' eyes and wordless motions but it's convincing as hell and it's as thrilling as any of the many incredible stunts and explosions. This movie is a miracle, in short.

It’s amazing how Miller makes every detail count in this film but it’s even more amazing how every detail conveys so much with so much economy. The scenery and props do an incredible amount of the expository work, and far more is explained in action, movement and the actors’ gestures and facial expressions than verbally in the script.

I watched the black and chrome edition this time for the first time. It’s exquisite but it’s hard for me to un-see…

Upped it to a full five stars after rewatching four years later. This movie is a sustained series of miracles.
