Wicked has been a beloved story for two decades, but seeing it on the big screen this year feels especially impactful. At its core, it’s about a woman who dares to stand up against a corrupt, authoritarian system and is ultimately punished by being labeled the villain. Meanwhile, her best friend takes the easier route, aligning with the regime and basking in the rewards. Sitting in the theater, I couldn’t help but think: how has this story resonated with audiences for so long, and yet… how did we end up here?
Now, I have read reviews praising Galinda as an incredible, even admirable character. Yes, Ariana Grande plays her brilliantly, showcasing her comedic talent, and vocal range. But let’s be honest for a moment. Mocking others for being true to themselves is nothing to celebrate. John Chu and Ariana Grande clearly understood this nuance, so why is this simple part of the plot going over the heads of so many?
As for the movie itself, Wicked is a visual and emotionally powerful spectacle with all the makings of a classic. Directed by John Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, yes, I went there and I’m not sorry), the film hits even for someone like me, who isn’t exactly a musical guy. I went with my friend, and our pack of children, thinking that this was mostly for their enjoyment, but quickly I realized that I was greatly mistaken. Wicked is for everyone. The chemistry between Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande is truly electric, and their vocal performances gave me chills more than once.
This is what happens when you cast actors who can actually sing in a musical. (Looking at you, Wonka.)
