New episode of the Cineflek podcast with Sophie and Siegel!!!
"A Technicolor world made out of music and machine.." La La Land is a joy to return to.
This was my first full rewatch since I saw it in theaters and it's amazing how it took me so long to return to this film. It has an energy and vibrancy that is irresistible.
While Whiplash was Damien Chazelle telling people "I've arrived!", La La Land is him telling people "I'm here to stay!" Not only is it important that it's his first LA movie, but it also showcases range and a really unique vision that is difficult to find in a young director. It is odd that this hasn't restarted a trend of Hollywood musicals as I predicted at the time, but rather a one off that seems to exist in its own world. It is unique and magnificent.
Gosling and Stone are also electric together. Gosling can be stiff on screen, and it is best when his character is almost aware, and self deprecating over this stiffness. His character Sebastian is a little self-important but also extremely likable. Gosling and Stone does great with the comedic moments in this as well. Two of my favorite SNL hosts, they are both able to make the non-musical moments just as interesting with witty dialogue and great chemistry.
It's a ton of fun to revisit, I highly recommend.
