Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 cult classic has finally arrived, and to be fair, I think it does the work and makes for a thrillingly fun time at the movies, which is actually more than one can expect of sequels or remakes nowadays.
Albeit its pretty linear and, at times, messy plot, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is clever enough to not fall into cheap and cheesy nostalgic moments or cameos and instead presents a refreshing and enjoyable story for the most part, that’s able to introduce new characters that fit nicely into its narrative, while also keeping the aesthetic and style that made the first Beetlejuice such a beloved film. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Tim Burton decided to go back to his roots and made a movie with such an 80s vibe in 2024, a decision -alongside the inestimable score from Danny Elfman- that would strongly benefit the movie’s success.
Apart from that, other strong points for me were the presence of Mr. Michael Keaton for a longer part of the runtime this time around and the inclusion of Willem Dafoe, who goes all in and yet again delivers a hilarious performance. At the end of the day both Keaton and Dafoe were clearly having a nice time with this film, and one can’t do nothing but smile about it. Also the movie is packed with the over-the-top and sharp humour from the original and I found myself laughing out loud more than once -especially during a sequence that involves Beetlegeuse lip-syncing a song with a tiny guitar-.
My only complaints would be that some characters such as Monica Bellucci’s as well as some plot lines are a tad underdeveloped and thus feel sort of unnecessary to the story, but they don’t affect the final product much, so honestly that’s not something to gripe much about.
Overall, while undoubtedly some fans would feel underwhelmed with this sequel and would’ve liked to see something different (as is always the case) I think Beetlejuice Beetlejuice works pretty well as a solid sequel and provides lots of funny moments in the beloved and unforgettable afterlife world of Beetlejuice, so I really can’t say that I was disappointed with this one!
