“Don’t judge me Cooper. You were never tested like I was. Few men have been”
- Dr. Mann.
Wrong. Cooper was tested the most.
Throughout all my reviews and rankings, you will notice I have a great love and admiration for Christopher Nolan. To me he is the best director of all time and this is his magnum opus.
The film follows ex-NASA pilot Joseph Cooper turned farmer living in a dystopian world ravaged by famine and blight who along with a few other scientists make the daring journey in search of a new world for humanity.
Some have said that the characters in this film are boring and I couldn’t disagree more. Interstellar is a methodical and beautiful story of the power of love and I think Cooper is arguably one of cinemas greatest characters. He makes the ultimate sacrifice…time. He has to leave his kids and misses everything. Everything. So, that there children can grow up and generations can continue to prosper. He is saving the world at the cost of never seeing his family again. If that isn’t fucking heartbreaking then I don’t know what is.
The cinematography and directing are immaculate. Gorgeous spectacular shots of space contrasted with the dull landscape of Earth. The film looks incredible, each shot and edit is fine tuned to perfection, where each shot means something or has a purpose. Few films have that ability and off the top of my head, Harakiri is another masterpiece that does this so well.
Nolan has crafted a film that I can never stop watching and I think the best viewing of this film is when you’re sad. It’s a film that inspires you. It may rip your heart out in scenes but the beauty of our world and its ability to inspire is shocking. After every viewing, I’m making another film or appreciating the smaller things and no other film has that impact on me.
The cast as well is phenomenal with Matthew McConaughey, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, Jessica Chastain, Ellen Burstyn I mean holy shit! What a cast that all play their parts beautifully, McConaughey especially gives his greatest performance and his facial expressions of pure sadness or joy is something to behold.
Finally, their being no villain in the film is great. Except there is a villain. A villain we cannot see but feel. Time. Nolan is particularly fascinated with time in his films often manipulating it in some way or another. The themes of love and time are prevalent throughout the film and it’s fucking fantastic. No one can escape it, we may try but it’s futile. All we can do is try and enjoy every moment of it. And Interstellar does that. It tells a great story filled with likeable characters, great themes and holy shit that music is something else.
Nolan has made what is in my opinion, the greatest film ever made and one that I don’t think can be beaten.
