Maybe the ultimate Rorschach test of a movie for all people. Or, specifically, in terms of men and women? The film has no redeemable characters. There's something amiss with each one. There's no saving here (thought it's discussed often) and there's no rising above the ugliness of humanity. It's because human behavior, especially in regards to romantic relationships, is ugly.
All the actors are exceptional--I personally think Clive Owens' Larry to be the most remarkable performance. (Natalie Portman's Alice a…

I am a good mom!!! I sat through three hours of this because the joy on my seven year old's face was exquisite. She danced, and I was happy.
Things that were of interest to me during the three hours: Taylor's stamina. She is the corniest woman alive but her fans love it; she plays into it all and they scream. She's telling stories. This woman "coyly winks" so much please light me on fire now. I think Blank Space…

★★★★½ Watched 20 Nov 2022
This won’t work for everyone, and I know that because I watched it in a packed cinema and hearing some reactions live was …wonderful. There were moments that surprised even me. I love a movie that I just let go and stop guessing as to where it’s going. There’s been a couple this season, all recent favorites, and I’d count this one in that category too.
Timothee Chalamet continues being the best 20s-something American actor; I don’t think there’s any competition sadly. And Taylor Russell… I loved her in Waves but I hope this truly catapults her into great projects.

★★½ Rewatched 22 Mar 2023
The local theater screened this movie last night because Zach Braff was here the night before and he's from this lil' NJ town and much of this film and his new one was filmed here. My friend bought four tickets and said, get in losers we're going shopping.
I used to watch this movie all the time in college, thinking it was profound. HA HA. I will give myself that leeway that perhaps the person I was then, hopelessly naive,…

Nary a character present. There are no people here.

I've rewatched this film several times since first seeing it in theaters in the 1990s -- and remarking on how great these new Aussies Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce were -- and it's still beautifully directed and acted. The intelligence of the script, the visuals, everything! This may be my #1 favorite movie of all time.

This movie does a lot of things REALLY well, but the story (the fable?) fails on a few levels for me.

★★★★ Rewatched 10 Dec 2023
My kid had a fever and we were snuggling on the couch and I said hey let's watch a movie I like and you'll recognize the main actress (my kid is a big fan of Yes Day) and it was a fun time.

Husband and I decided to stream this, and it's not what I expected but we were laughing and then I got the NYT breaking news alert that Kissinger had died so I paused to pour us some celebratory drinks and then we finished the movie laughing uncontrollably. All in all, a fun time and a swell evening in!
OK MARSHAWN LYNCH!

Friday night movie night with the kid: the kid saw CATS as we were scrolling through options and then learned Taylor Swift was in it and well, now I’ve seen one of the worst movies ever made.
I do believe Tom Hooper is one of the worst working directors out there. Just zero after zero for me. I can’t stand his work.
And there were so many crimes committed here, across many departments. I’m aghast.

Cringed through this. An uneven ensemble, and uneven characters… some of the adaptation of these characters (and the huge one they cut out of the narrative) feel like different people from one scene to the next. Including Anne. Couldn’t believe the last look to camera, woof.
It was as if the director tried to emulate moments from Bright Star and the homage is paltry, sad, depressing.

This is just not a movie I wanted to see. I did see it because I volunteered to help out the local film society screening of it with a screenwriter Q&A. As I told my husband last night, this is not a movie I would have gone to the theater to the see nor sought out on streaming.
That said, the acting is very good. The screenwriting apparently based on a lot of journalistic fact. But I don't want to…
