I am in utter shock, I actually enjoyed a legacy sequel / a modern Tim Burton film.
I kind of took this entire thing as a separate entity to the original, I knew no matter the film they made it wouldn’t really matter, but I think this film actually managed to toe the line in a fun way.
The plot structure of this just falls apart half way through but I don’t mind, the original had very little plot, and I enjoyed the fact that this film devolves into insanity reasonably quick. Major plot beats being dealt with with super anti climatic moments is just funny to me, especially the main ending which ends in a way that I adore.
All of the CGI stuff looked kinda terrible/okay but the practical stuff was beautiful, it’s great to have a Tim Burton that looks as unique as his best works do. This film kind of carries the logic and tone that the entirety of the third act of the original film does, which makes it a blast, there’s no retreading the stuff we learnt in the first one, no, we already know all that bullshit let’s just get onto the new stuff.
I will say the cast were all great, I enjoyed Michael Keaton as per usual but Jenna Ortega fits pretty well into the film. The score wasn’t as good as it is in the first one but mainly because I never noticed it nearly as much. It’s also nice to have a sequel that actually retains the cast from the first one instead of bringing a bunch of new assholes and one of the guys from the first one.
I really am surprised at how much I thoroughly enjoyed this film, with most legacy sequels/modern movies in general, I like them with a caveat of something I really disliked, whereas Beetlejuice Beetlejuice just worked for me.
I’m so happy that this film isn’t utter dogshit.
