Motherhood’s hard, at least that’s what my mum makes sure me and my siblings know, without ever saying those words. The Wild Robot shows exactly why it’s hard, and exactly why she has never said those words to us before in a surprisingly mature, emotional and beautiful way, both in its narrative and incredible animation. Each frame could have been generated on a computer a few weeks ago, or they could’ve been brushed onto a canvas centuries ago, the beauty of its style is undeniable. Throw in a stacked cast, who bring across so much emotion in their voices alone, and you have a delicate, relatable animated tearjerker. I just wish it didn’t turn into an action film at the end, and that they hadn’t so obviously tried to setup a sequel.
