Palatable for mass consumption yet emotionally moving with a simple, impactful central relationship, Dreamworks’ answer to WALL-E translates robots discovering emotions into the animal world, layering in its ecological undertones with ease without getting preachy. Sticking with the classic story of unexpected adopting parent, The Wild Robot hits all the right beats to perfectly tear up the audience at the expectedly beautiful dramatic moment (you know it’s coming, but Sanders keep achingly stretching the climax out in a way that does not feel gimmicky).
This one has it all for Pixar-style lovers, and if it feels a little too perfect (as in, on the nose at times), the stellar animation proves this to be a modern classic of the genre—originals beat sequels almost any day of the week.
