We have been absolutely FED with animated films this year. One of the best of the year and I am wrecked writing this through my tears. Normally, I’d say this much narration and voice over would be a cop out but the way that Sarah Snook delivers such an emotionally raw performance while still balancing some comedy really fits the entire aesthetic.
And the animation style… I’m awestruck. I am not an expert on animation by any means but I…

Angelina Jolie is magnetic and unbelievable in Pablo Larraín’s most recent biopic of famous and tortured women. The wonders of being on ludes, beautiful, skinny, talented, and delusional. The singing is stunning, for Angelina Jolie to train to sing like THIS but also not be annoying about it at the same way?! For that alone, she deserves an Oscar.
As was Spencer, the main takeaway of the film is the titular character. Although beautiful to look at, lacks more of…

I brought my mom to watch this- my second time within a week. She’s a huge lover of the original film and was weary but left the theatre in tears (happy and sad).
After rating this 5 stars after my first watch and reading reviews that were not as high on this film as I was, I was watching for these specific complaints that I read to see if my mind was changed. But it wasn’t!!! I actively looked for…

Who would’ve thought that the best music of the year in a film would be a film about Priscilla Presley but feature no Elvis music?!
Easily one of my most awaited films this year by one of my Mount Rushmore directors and it didn’t disappoint. Sofia Coppola has managed to turn the entire Elvis persona on its side with such a compassionate study of Priscilla. The entire film was immensely stylish, everything I want in a Sofia Coppola film but…

Bad Axe is an immensely personal documentary by David Siev. The documentary chronicles his immigrant parents’ restaurant and their first generation children during the pandemic and amidst rising racial tensions in rural Bad Axe, Michigan. My favorite doc of 2022 by far.
This is a lot more than just a pandemic documentary. There’s a lot to explore in David’s fathers journey immigrating over to America from Cambodia and the conditions in Cambodia at that time as well as his moms…

A wonder to be such a beautiful and boring film all at the same time. Like many have pointed out, Akerman trains you to be in Jeanne’s routine and to live her life. However in the minutia of Jeanne’s life, there’s still so many layers and questions to explore.
This was so challenging for me to watch but I think that watching this with intention has made be a better film viewer. Akerman’s long takes are almost hypnotic in a…

This is an incredibly hard film for me to rate. I like Noah Baumbach and Adam Driver and obviously LOVE Greta. I have been anticipating this film since its announcement but was nervous about the recent mixed reviews. I have not read the Don DeLillo novel but my partner has and she agreed with most on it being very hard to adapt.
There are many parts of the film that I really like but there’s equal as many that I…

The Whale absolutely devastated me, I can’t remember the last film that made me this emotional. The acting performances and the writing combined to make a very captivating character study.
I am historically not very good in films that are adapted from plays. Despite my best efforts, tend to not hold my attention with the limited locations and heavy dialogue. I didn’t have that feeling in The Whale at all. If anything, the one location was almost a character on…

I FECKIN loved this!! I wrote this film off pretty quickly, thinking it wouldn’t be for me, wasn’t my type of film. I was pleasantly surprised on how charmed I was by the film within the first 30 minutes. The humor and the wit really got me. It only got better from there and the stunning Irish landscape cinematography was gorgeous. Kerry Condon stole the film, was just amazed by her performance. I was also so impressed on how Martin McDonagh could create a beautiful film that stands alone as is but also draws into themes of loneliness, legacy, and friendship when explored further.
