Even more impressed on a rewatch, so many details that are even more prevalent and impressive that I caught! This as a Best Picture nom is such an amazing thing to see.. hopefully denoting a shift in the Academy.

The Brutalist 2024
Clearly my worst take of this year is giving the same rating to The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez.

Death by Numbers 2024
Extremely well done and touching. Parkland is such an awful tragedy that we’ve almost become numb too because so many more shootings (154 at the time of the making of this doc) have happened since. Fuck guns.

Hard Truths 2024
“I just want it to all stop.”
I loved this film. Incredible performance by Marianne Jean-Baptiste. The way she portrays the nuances of depression, anxiety, and grief is something that I know all too well. It’s hard to admit, but I saw pieces of me in Pansy. As unlikable as she is, I felt for her because I know her and I am her at times. We all are whether we want to admit it or not. Mike Leigh has…

Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat 2024
Incredibly stylish but the content was not really for me and it ran way too long for how quick the pace feels in the moment.

Better Man 2024
I get why he casted himself as a monkey (chimp? ape?) but doesn’t make the movie good or compelling.

September 5 2024
Propulsive journalistic thriller about the Munich Olympics hostage crisis. Can’t be mad anytime John Magaro is on my screen but can’t help thinking politically with the current Israeli-Palestine situation. I’m not trying to be eager to be offended by any means but it does seem slightly one sided. I guess that is okay because a film shouldn’t have decades of complex conflict on its shoulders?? I just can’t really think that this was the best time for this to come out…

Nickel Boys 2024
I'm struggling to find the right words to describe how I feel about RaMell Ross' first narrative feature. I don’t think I've been this moved by the visual storytelling of a film since Nomadland (though I know that one’s a bit divisive). When I first heard about the first-person POV, I was worried it might feel like a gimmick, but as the film unfolded, I realized just how intentional and methodical it is. The first-person perspective truly immerses you in…

The Apprentice 2024
Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong are human chameleons. Amazing performances.
