Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road

Oh what a day… what a lovely day!

Mad Max: Fury Road is an incredible film, and with each passing rewatch I realise that it is a masterpiece and easily in the top 5 action films of all time.

Even 8 years later, Fury Road feels like a film in a league of its own; a film with a near $200m budget and one that yet somehow feels like an anarchic heist perpetrated on Warner Brothers. It is a film unlike anything in the zeitgeist back then and even now, and I’m so glad that George Miller was given the free reign to carry out his vision for this film without any interference.

Fury Road hits the accelerator (pun intended) from the get-go and rarely lets up at all, which makes it’s few moments of solace and humanity all the more remarkable. Fury Road’s commitment to practical stuntwork and effects as much as possible is it’s biggest asset, and has made the film ageless. The stunt work is outstanding in this film, and the vehicle stunts in particular are easily the greatest ever put to film.

The world of The Wasteland is impeccably detailed and richly illustrated, even without much expository dialogue. Miller rightly trusts his own visuals and environmental design to do the work for him, and the first scene with Immortan Joe and the waterfall tells you all you need to know about this world.

People have complained about there being no depth to the story of Fury Road, and I couldn’t disagree more. This is a multilayered narrative with themes including freedom, post apocalyptic patriarchy, environmental destruction and inhumanity, to name a few. To label Fury Road merely a “chase film” is to miss the point entirely.

Fury Road is jaw-dropping cinema on a scale I’ve only also seen in Dune since, a rare achievement in film that only comes once in a while. I regret everyday that I didn’t get to see this one in the cinema.
