Still just an absolutely kick ass movie. I went back and looked at the Oscar's it racked up when it came out and they basically encapsulate everything that's great about this movie. The editing is so frenetic and energetic but not confusing or disorienting. The costume, makeup and production design do so much to build this vivid, almost surreal apocalyptic world. This is one of those movies where I feel like I'm using all five of my sense during it cause I can smell the oil, I can feel the rust and I can taste the sand. It's such a visceral film experience and totally unique to this day.
I think the only things that have soured on me since I saw this when I was like 16 are a few of the CG visuals haven't aged well and can be distracting and they weirdly cut around the more gruesome violence almost like they were hoping for a PG13 at some point. And an issue that I've always been aware of but has only gotten worse with age is I wish the movie had a slightly stronger script. Not necessarily more plot but just more depth to its themes which are very standard apocalypse. But I really have to dig for those criticisms.
A landmark of action filmmaking and still a pretty untouchable movie. Nothing really comes close to capturing this movies particularly vibe and energy. Pure blood and oil.
