When the first musical sequence began, I had to admit I was a bit unsure if I was going to like this very beloved movie. The only real contact I previously had with musicals was... High School Musical. Yeah. That was my only real reference point, and the first two musical sequences kinda reminded me of it, I have to admit.
But man, my worries were blown away when I witnessed the movie folding out in front of me. La La Land is a fucking fantastic movie. It's simply a feast for the eyes and ears. The "A Lovely Night" sequence will most definitely find its solid place in film history. From the moment I saw it for the first time I knew I was witnessing film history right there.
The whole film is so masterfully crafted, I'm pretty sure I've never seen anything like it. Damien Chazelle propelled his way up as one my favorite new directors.
The story is nothing revolutionary, but it doesn't matter. The way this simple story is told, through great music and creative cinematography, makes it incredibly special. A love letter to a long-forgotten age of film, La La Land is a movie for the ages.
