The dance choreography and the songs were great but where this film really shines is as a portrait of a relationship between two struggling artists. Emma Stone is so charming in this role, and I'm really impressed with how far she has come, both in the arc of her career and her skill as an actress. Ryan Gosling is equally strong and I think he will collect a couple of Oscars before his career is done.
Damien Chazelle deserves all of the praise he received for this because some of these big dance sequences are quite a grand achievement. I love the way he moves his camera throughout these big musical numbers. He also modernized his musical in a way that makes it feel natural among its contemporaries. I love that it's a small film with big moments. I feel like a lot of musicals suffer from the same problems as superhero movies: everything has to be bigger than the last one. I hope his success is a sign of things to come in the genre.
