Not bad, for a goose.
Spectacular, give me 14 of 'em right now. I'd like to start this off by saying I have an irrational fear of geese so The Wild Robot had already set itself the lofty goal of making me feel for a demon spawn but not only did I feel for that goose, I cried for that goose, I cried for that robot and I cried at that ending. Ever since Kung Fu Panda 4 came out earlier this year it became abundantly clear that what I needed from Dreamworks was an original piece that reminds me why I love this studio; Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was beautiful but was about a character with nearly two decades of character building what I needed was a Megamind, Shrek or HTTYD level origin and I'm so happy that this one hit that mark.
The animation is so clearly Dreamworks style but once again it's distinct enough from it's own style that it breathes a new kind of life into the way everything is coloured or moves and I think this has to be up there in terms of the best looking Dreamworks production as there's just so much to admire in every moment. Then putting that on top of this beautiful story about motherhood, empathy and how beautiful life can be when you learn to love all the colours it brings to an otherwise black and white world was truly heartwarming.
HUGE PLUS is that they had Matt Berry voice act in the film so that immediately made it a great movie but even then I don't think there was a single VA in the cast that didn't absolutely smash it out the park with how perfect they were for each role. Ros in particular carried so much emotion, that only heightened as the film progressed, all without losing the fact that her voice was robotic.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish lost to Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio which hurt because I felt that Puss in Boots was able to talk about familial connections, relationships and connections with death in a much more heartfelt way, that anyone could resonate with, better than Pinocchio did and it's for that reason I'm all in on The Wild Robot winning Best Animated Film this year. Frankly, this film just blows every animated film that I have recently watched out the water and it's an absolute must watch for anyone looking to cry, laugh or straight up just enjoy an animated original again.
