This was among one of my most anticipated films of the year and tied for my most anticipated animated film for the year with Memoir of a Snail that I thought would push the boundaries of animation and/or tell an emotionally resonating story just like How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo and Stitch. Unfortunately, I am underwhelmed by Dreamworks' and Chris Sanders' latest film that honestly has all the pieces for me to love this, but it all was not executed to my liking sadly. The animation is by far the best thing about the film that makes it look like a children's storybook come to life with so much detail and vibrant colors throughout that truly makes it seem like it's pulsating with life just like Roz. The story overall is what really dragged the whole movie down for me because it just felt overly cheesy and corny throughout with not much buildup or development or something to make the ending hit harder than it did, which I will admit did get me emotional even though I was not satisfied with the first two acts. I will admit that I am easily susceptible to cheesiness and mostly easy to emotionally manipulate when it comes to films, but I just couldn't get on with anything this film wants to tell because of how obvious it spells out its themes that I've seen done better in other family movies especially with the decision of having the animals talk. I do think this film would resonate better for me if there was minimal dialogue and it's only Roz and the other robots that can speak, that way I can feel Roz's growing love for nature and the animals more, and the ending would be more sentimental and heart warming to me. I will definitely be in the minority for not liking this movie as much as others currently are, according to the Letterboxd curve at the moment, but I could not emphasize more how much I wanted to love this movie and consider it to be one of the best movies of the year, yet it just sadly didn't connect with me as much as everybody else. I guess I feel similarly about this movie as many did about The Creator last year (I'm one of the few defenders of that movie) where it is visually amazing, but everything about it is lacking from being anything great. As negative as I might come off from this review, I don't really hate or dislike this movie in any way. In fact, I am mostly fairly positive about it as a whole that's bordering on mid for me, though I am willing to give this a rewatch because some annoying theater goers took me out of the movie at points. At least this movie was not as disappointing as Drive Away Dolls in my opinion.
