Iamofthebread’s review published on Letterboxd:
I wish this movie and I went back to being strangers
I didn't really like the original strangers the second was an improvement and that's not saying much so I thought I'd give this a go to see if they've workshopped the idea into something salvageable, NOPE. Every living and bleeding fiber of my being hates what I have just witnessed, unbelievably generic in some parts I was falling asleep. Cliché doesn't even begin to cover how unoriginal this was, "how about we do a scene where the least threatening person appears close to the window BUTTTTT we put an obnoxiously loud noise over it?"
The audacity to make me sit with these brainlets for over an hour is already atrocious but the fact that there wasn't a single beat to this film that wasn't predictable made this one of the most excruciatingly painful watches of the year. Here's a scene breakdown for how annoying this film is:
- Couple get in escape vehicle
- Stranger crashes into them multiple times
- Couple split up
- Man grabs shotgun and cocks, ready for action
- Horror moment where villain conveniently has moved without a trace only to reappear in loud noise jumpscare attempt in 5-10 seconds
- Man has haysack stranger in sight with pre-cocked gun.... COCKS IT AGAIN, HAYSACK MOVES THEN HE SHOOTS, HAYSACK DOESN'T CAPITALISE
The editing was just as bad for example a scene not long after the woman runs into pin-up, in another ineffective predictable loud jumpscare attempt, explaining the event to her boyfriend we cut to him, to her, to him, to her, to the room we have just seen pin-up in because she mentioned that room, to him, to her. THAT MANY CUTS IN ONE TAKE FOR SUCH A NOTHING SCENE IS INSANE, WAS THE CAST UNABLE TO DELIVER THESE LINES THAT MUCH THAT IT NEEDED THIS MUCH CHOPPING AROUND?!
Off screen axe kill, tamest aftermath to a shotgun blast to the side of the head, kitchen knife to the gut not a single memorable kill in a horror film when the beginning of the film talks about this being a brutal case is unforgivable. The fact that this was already planned as a trilogy drastically dropped any stakes for the strangers then to end it on a TO BE CONTINUED, get the actual fuck out of here.
Awful performances, awful writing, awful cinematography and overall an awful movie.
½/5
