Ahhhh yes. What a delight this movie is. Of all musicals, this is easily my favorite. As a musical it’s amazing. The songs are really good and memorable, they’re sung beautifully, the music to go along with it is fantastic, the choreography (for the ones that have it) is super well done, and the overall feeling of the song is the feeling that you have in that moment. I remember after the first time I watched this I was whistling, singing, and humming the songs for a week straight. As a romance/drama it also works in the best ways. It does follow rom-com style events, but with two leads that aren’t as typical as most characters in those types of movies. They’re not just in the movie to fall in love with each other. They’re also there to pursue their dreams. They both have dreams and they learn that they have to sacrifice something for that to happen. And sadly that means that they might have to give each other up, which clearly, they don’t want to do. It’s so heartbreaking to watch the past 10 minutes and see where these characters are at, where they have what they wanted at the beginning, but they’re still missing a piece in their lives.
Damien Chazelle will probably go down as one of my favorite directors, what with this and Whiplash, and First Man on the way to being watched. He can really make a movie where you care about the characters and the results. This movie captures the feel of classic Hollywood, like Singing In the Rain, and modernizes it so well with an evolving style of music. It also does it with great cinematography, especially in the opening scene, that makes for a wonderfully crafted film with a somewhat frustrating but true ending.
