it’s so funny how some filmmakers in the late 90s really were owing their entire careers to scream
Urban Legend is one of my favorite post-Scream Gen-X slasher movies. I like it more than I Know What You Did Last Summer. It's a fun mix of horror and humor. The cast is good looking, and the reveal of the killer isn't obvious.
The killer might not have a catchy nickname like Ghostface, but like Big Daddy Kane; Urban Legend gets the job done, and it works. I noticed on this rewatch the minimal gore used in the kills. Not a lot, but damn effective. Is it an ode to old school shoestring budget slashers? I'm not sure. Maybe, they wanted to use the budget for other things like cassette tapes, Pepsi and Pop Rocks?
The cast is hip.…

Gosh, the post-Scream era is so undervalued. Urban Legend is characterized with many similar elements - the attractive Dawson's Creek esque cast, the meta concept (this being murders based on 'urban legends', some of them which seem entirely fabricated, I don't know, I'm not an expert), the university setting, and the tension of young adults vs. stubborn authority - but it holds up as more than a just a cash cow. It's mostly a straight-laced whodunit slasher, with a memorable killer, entertaining characters, and a spooky setting in a prestigious east coast university. There's even a fun Halloween party sequence, which is always a plus in my book. The referential cameos from Robert Englund, Brad Dourif ("He's in the back-seat!"), and Danielle Harris (in goth mode) are cute, but what defines Urban Legend is its dedication to creating an enjoyable hack and slash.
yes i rated this higher than the shawshank redemption! shoutout to my film teacher and anyone who ever respected me
Now listen, I’m not saying this movie doesn’t have some problems and big ones at that. Like how the fuck does the killer pull all this shit off especially when you learn who it is. But what I am saying is that how can you not love a movie that features:
☑️ Alicia Witt (put her sassy ass in anything as far as I’m concerned)
☑️ Tara Reid as a college radio sex therapist in one of her best worst performances
☑️ Rebecca Gayheart giving one of the most unintentionally hysterical performances you’ve ever seen in a horror movie. Like it’s a toss up between whether I love hers or Reid’s performance the most.
☑️ Danielle Harris as a chain…
