I shit you not, a mere minute and twenty seconds in to the film there is a computer generated baby dick. Can you imagine your first job out of visual effects school you think "cool i'm on Underworld that will have a lot of interesting effects" then they drop the bomb on you that you will be "baby dick animator".
Maybe I'm old fashion but I prefer my Vampire and Werewolves in a medieval setting rather than his Matrix future style of the other entries. Now I don't think this is very good, but it's completely the Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen show. They didn't even need to have the Hollywood Boulevard Kate Beckinsale lookalike, it would have been fine…
This movie gives justice to the Lycans who have always been seen as the villains. Sonja does look so much like Selene physically and by personality.

At the end of the day, this is nothing more than Spartacus but with werewolves and vampires. And you know what, I like it.
In spite of the fact that this time the franchise focuses more on narrative than on action, as I have mentioned so far, the premise and lore are interesting enough to stand on their own as the movie proves in the end. The whole backstabbing and even the fact that these werewolves are a product of the vampires as a sort of hound dogs, almost like pets, was a nice twist that the film handled very well.

How the hell does this basic story have FIVE writers?! It's not great but it's the best in the franchise - Rhona Mitra sells the willful warrior shtick better than Beckinsale ever did, Michael Sheen is as always wonderful and the two of them have actual chemistry unlike the main couple in the series. There's also a pretty hot sex scene, clearly inspired by Snyder's 300, but much better.
Those films have really great soundtracks. King Black Acid's Let's Burn is on this one's OST and it's such a banger.
Michael Sheen playing both a vampire and a werewolf in the same year and giving very different performances is kinda hilarious to me.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is the fortunate recipient of a half-star bump, attributed entirely to what I call “The Rhona Mitra Effect.”
Also, I never would have thought Micheal Sheen could be a viable action hero, but he acquits himself nicely, bringing some much needed intensity and gravitas to the third entry of the Underworld series.

It's an intriguing idea -- taking what was a 2-3 minute origin story from the first Underworld that took place some centuries ago and making it a full blown movie.
The good thing is that Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen have full-fledged rolls again and they are solid as usual. And Rhona Mitra is excellent as a stand-in for Kate Beckinsale who apparently decided to sit this one out (although as a different character -- Victor's daughter).
My reaction to Rhona's role in Neill Marshall's Doomsday (2009) was that she essentially looked like Kate Beckinsale. I guess the Underworld filmmakers of this movie thought so too.

The third part of the Underworld franchise is a prequel that exists basically to flesh out one plot point from the first film; namely the development of the Lucian character and how the war between Vampires and Lycans began. It's a perfectly fine horror action hybrid, although I will admit that I have a bit of a soft spot for this series. The action is relocated to the medieval times and so the rapid fire guns are replaced by swords and spears. There's no Kate Beckinsale either, though Rhona Mitra does a perfectly fine impression of her. From Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man to Freddy vs. Jason. From King Kong vs. Godzilla to Alien vs. Predator. For almost as long as we've had movie monsters, we've been pitting them against each other for our own entertainment. Here, in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, it's all out war between vampires and lycans (werewolves), with a story of tragic romance and slave revolt that feels, tonally, somewhere along the lines of Spartacus: Blood and Sand or Braveheart. Furthermore, this story is presented with a visual aesthetic that feels like someone combined Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings with Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, albeit more dimly lit and with a blue filter applied throughout.
