It's an intriguing idea -- taking what was a 2-3 minute origin story from the first Underworld that took place some centuries ago and making it a full blown movie.
The good thing is that Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen have full-fledged rolls again and they are solid as usual. And Rhona Mitra is excellent as a stand-in for Kate Beckinsale who apparently decided to sit this one out (although as a different character -- Victor's daughter).
My reaction to Rhona's role in Neill Marshall's Doomsday (2009) was that she essentially looked like Kate Beckinsale. I guess the Underworld filmmakers of this movie thought so too.
I loved all the vampire vs. werewolf fighting scenes. The problem is that nothing much happens in this backstory. They could've tried to provide more depth or interesting characters/story lines but they don't -- it's that original back story with a bunch of fight scenes around it. And then it just ends.
But I'm getting my werewolf fix which is all I'm expecting with this series binge.
