What a great freaking movie. So what happened? Was Michael Bay replaced by a Body Snatcher or something?
The first strands of Bay DNA gloriously infect and begin mutating the quintessential American action film. Like a poisonous chemical rendered aerosol, it's about to destroy the city, and we never saw it coming.
Nothing says extra sticky butter popcorn munchin' at its most macho of action adrenaline junkie rushes quite like Michael Bay's The Rock. It has a cast to Die Hard for, insane action, loud booming sound and full on BayNess.
The cast is bananas. Nic Cage is full tilt loco. Sean Connery brings his 007 swag. Ed Harris doesn't go all Man in Black as the sympathetic baddie. Michael Biehn gets to play his character from Navy Seals. That's not all! This cast is loaded. Bay's best movies live in that exact intersection of ugly, unhinged American id and stunningly, nonsensical virtuoso craft. You can definitely see those Bay-isms starting to form here in the visual construction but my overall opinion on this remains mostly the same: fun central performances, dynamic images, solid enough that it laid the groundwork for what a decade of American action films would look/operate/structure like, etc. But outside of a couple choice moments of violence this is way too average and "respectable" of a cable programmer to really delight in his idiosyncrasies. Tony Scott (or any other house Bruckheimer filmmaker) could've made this and idk how functionally different it would be, which is I imagine why it's every boring person's favorite Bay. Easy 3-star Sunday afternoon dad watch classic. For whatever reason I had no memory of Zimmer test running a few future Pirates of the Caribbean motifs in this. Action! - Three Auteurs: Bayhem
Often referred to by many as Bay’s best film, on this rewatch (my second overall), I could get behind that. It has all the style and great camerawork from Bay, with one of the most 90s Zimmer-rousing score and dumb, campy fun that, for better or for worse, has characterized Bay’s films. Plenty of awesome, cheesy quotable lines. Some will get a laugh out of you; others will make you cringe. Also, between this and Armageddon, there’s two movies where JFK assassination has been brought up—guess Bay or his writers are very much into that?
