Leonard is an English tailor who used to craft suits on London’s world-famous Savile Row. listen, I'm nobody, you don't have to trust me, but let me say: this might, as of March 23, the movie of the year. it's the quintessential thing we don't get anymore – a mid-budget, for-adults drama that is not altogether winking or altogether serious. there's little profundity, no greater message, not really. you're getting what it says on the box (the outfit). the flick starts strong with some Rylance voiceover, and I figured, you know, sooner or later, this will lose me. never lost me! stuck with it all the way – and I think it rewards that commitment too. there's approximately four point two good performances out of its five leads. though it takes place in "Chicago" and…
Every time I thought I had THE OUTFIT figured out, it kept turning the tables on me, keeping me in suspense. Its abundance & reliance on twists is its greatest asset & greatest flaw as it pushed my suspension of disbelief past a certain point. Still, I had fun with this smart & gripping crime thriller. Unfolds like a play over the course of one evening in a single location with Mark Rylance delivering a subtly captivating performance.
Between this and Not Okay, the casting agent who keeps putting Zoey Deutch and Dylan O’Brien in movies together deserves an award for service to the bisexual community
this will live and die being watched by your dad on TNT at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon and I mean that in a good way.
This isn’t art… This is a craft.
An old-fashioned single-setting whodunnit that eats away at your nerves with a slow build of tension that’s as consistent as the dripping of blood from a freshly cadavered trunk.
Packed with deliberate dialogue and a slow burn, this may not be for everyone, but I had a great time. And I love that the story’s strong enough that it could have just as easily been a play, a novel, of even one of those old-school radio mysteries that I used listen to, late into the night, as I hid under the covers.
So slip on your best smoking jacket, pour yourself a generous snifter of brandy and settle in as Mark Rylance expertly spins the thrilling threads of a yarn that’s as intriging and finely crafted as grandfather’s fine leather chair.

So pleasantly surprised by this! A patient single location whodunit with a razor sharp script. Shot in such a captivating way and isn’t afraid to slowly unravel the mystery. Genuinely surprised me several times! Mark Rylance is brilliant, but Dylan O’Brien, Zoey Deutch, and Johnny Flynn hold their own against him. The last 10-15 minutes should’ve been left to the imagination, and the twists get to be a bit much at the end, but it maintains a steady grip until then.
Kudos to Graham Moore for coming out of the gate with a good film in one of the most difficult genres. This is such a little gem.
Calling all one-location thriller and crime thriller fans: this one is for YOU! Genuinely surprised people aren't talking about The Outfit - great cast, great tension, plenty of twists and turns, and really good use of the setting and time period.
