"The Day After" hat auch heute noch eine große Wirkung! Der Film war in den 80er Jahren ein eklatanter Weckruf angesichts des Kalten Krieges und der atomaren Bedrohung. Die düstere Geschichte einer Kleinstadt in Kansas nach einem Atomangriff ist immer noch packend und wird von großartigen Schauspielern und Schauspielerinnen getragen.
Nicholas Meyer hat ein wirklich unangenehmes Ding abgeliefert, das die reale Bedrohung durch eine nukleare Apokalypse eindrucksvoll vermittelt und das keine Sekunde Spaß macht. Natürlich sind die Effekte einfach, aber die Botschaft bleibt stark. Der Überlebenskampf der Hauptfiguren zeigt die schiere Hilflosigkeit der Menschen in einer solchen Situation.
Die Erzählweise mit unterschiedlichen Charakteren verstärkt den emotionalen Aspekt und lässt einen mit den Menschen leiden und ihre Ängste miterleben.…
Während einer Atombombenexplosion setzt besagte Kernwaffe im Epizentrum eine Hitze von weit über einer Millionen Celsius frei was zu folgenden zwei Auswirkungen führt:
zum einen erzeugt die Hitze einen weißglühenden Feuerball der sämtlichen in der Luft befindlichen Sauerstoff aufsaugt und sich schlagartig ausdehnt sodass der charakteristische Atompilz entsteht. Wird die Kernwaffe auf Bodennähe gezündet, entsteht durch den Saugeffekt der hochgerissenen Feststoffen wie Erde, Staub, Schutt wie Trümmer ein heißes Gasgemisch was nach fünfzehn Minuten zu Boden fällt und zur Kontaminierung der Umgebung in Rücksichtnahme der Wetterverhältnisse steht. Im Epizentrum der Explosion, ist sämtliches Leben ausgelöscht.

I can 💯% see why this was a cultural talking point in the early 80’s. Not even the dated, made-for-TV-movie quality of this film could lessen its terrifying vision of what the fallout of a nuclear disaster would look like.
Okay, ich muss "Day After" nach dieser Original-Sichtung mit diversen neuen Szenen und Verlängerungen doch etwas höher bewerten als "Threads”. Letztes Mal war es gefühlt anders herum.
Ein hervorragend rhythmischer Schnitt, Informationen pumpend, gemischt mit dem Dokumentarfilm-Material echter Soldaten und den Storylines der Familien und Protagonisten machen TDA einfach noch etwas emotionaler, wenn auch nicht so schockierend weitsichtig wie sein englischer Kompagnon. Nur schade, dass sie das brutale Rauschen des Raketen-Stockfootages nicht korrigieren konnten.
So verstörend "Threads" auch ist - "The Day After" induziert vor und während der ganzen Angriffssequenz pure Panik. Hat man selten. Unabhängig davon ist dies einer der Filme, die man einfach nicht ausmachen kann.
I joke on the latest episode of Director's Lottery that the Letterboxd reviews for this film about nuclear war by Nicholas Meyer divide neatly into two halves: American viewers saying it's the most traumatic thing they've ever seen, and British viewers saying "Yeah, it's no Threads". Loath as I am to repeat the majority verdict, this is indeed no Threads. A lot of it feels like a very corny TV movie, which isn't necessarily a problem - part of the fascination of doing something like this on television lies in subverting the domestic cosiness of the medium. But I just don't have enough investment in or knowledge of the style and feel of American TV movies from this era, so it doesn't feel as impactful for me as something like Ghostwatch.
Terrifying. This is filmed in an intimate way that gives it a documentary-feel to it. I know that if I (was alive) and saw this in theaters in 1983, I wouldn’t be able to sleep for weeks.
